3 Qualities of a Good Book Title

Welcome to Q & A Wednesdays by Book Mentor, Ezra Barany. This week Ezra addresses 3 qualities of a good title.

Good news! This week’s winner of a 30-minute complimentary consultation of your book with Ezra is: Dixon Rice. Congrats! We’ll be contacting you for your Book Mentoring session with Ezra.

And thank you to author, Matt Posner, author of School of the Ages: The Ghost in the Crystal, for sending in this question! (We interviewed Matt about his book on this blog just a few weeks ago!)

In this video, Ezra Barany covers what the 3 qualities of a good book title. Many people think that if your title is directed to a limited group of people, an agent will not like its lack of broad appeal. But actually, agents are not as interested in your title as they are in understanding the marketability of your book. And if you just focus on demonstrating your novel’s appeal — what makes your book unique from other books in your genre — then the agent will see that your book can attract the right audience, and, if there’s a match, help you sell it to a publisher.

Here’s our question for you: What are your thoughts on what makes for a good book title?

Thanks!

  • I’ve been thinking about this recently and I’d say catchy, should give a real sense of the book and unique . The last one isn’t always possible if it’s perfect in every other way.
