INDIE AUTHOR RESOURCES: How to Get Your Book on the Nook and the Kindle and Smashwords

ebook-readers-imagesWelcome to the weekly series on Resources for Indie Authors. All resources I use and cull from my life as an Independent Publishing Consultant and Book Coach, published author, and indie author in fiction!

Most indie authors will do well to have their books on the Kindle, the Nook, and at Smashwords — which allows readers to download in multiple formats.

This article was designed to get you started. Future articles will get into more tech details re: formatting. For each distributor I list:

  • where you sign in
  • royalties
  • what formatting is required for your book
  • and how they pay.

KINDLE

  • Formatting help: http://www.ehow.com/how_4494481_convert-ebooks-kindle-format.html

  • Royalties: 70% –> To qualify for the 70 percent royalty option, books must satisfy the following set of requirements:
    • The author or publisher-supplied list price must be between $2.99 and $9.99
    • This list price must be at least 20 percent below the lowest physical list price for the physical book
    — WORKS only on books sold through amazon.com.

    • 40% of the List Price
  • How pays: “In most cases, you will be paid 60 days after the close of the calendar month in which the sale occurs.”

SMASHWORDS

  • http://www.smashwords.com/: .epub; you get to choose your e-book distributors; I recommend iBook and Sony Reader.
  • Formatting: http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/52
**Keep in mind that Smashwords has very specific formatting requirements before your book can be uploaded for iBook/iPad.
  • Royalties: 60% of List Price from Major Ebook Retailers; 85% from sales off the Smashwords site
  • How pays: Smashwords sales: 30-40 days after sale and $10.00 for all authors who want electronic payment via Paypal. Vendor sales: 40 days after the close of each quarter

That’s it for now!

Go be prosperous! {Isn’t so cool we can get our books out there now?!}

PS. I haven’t worked with an ebook vendors yet, so don’t have any one to recommend, yet. If you have a special recommendation, go ahead and share it in the comments. Thanks!
