Are you a networker or system creator?

As a writer, we can categorize ourselves as a plotter, pantser, or hybrid.

Similarly, as a marketer, there may be just a few types: networker and system creator. I’ve found that Beth prefers networking whereas I prefer to spend an enormous amount of time setting up a marketing system that will eventually run by itself.

Networker – The advantage is that you get to interact directly with your potential fans via social media or at events, and that can be fun. The disadvantage is that you need to do so regularly, whether it’s a few minutes a week or a couple hours a day.

Systems Creator – The advantage is once you set up a marketing system, it does the work for you on its own forever, promoting you while you work on other things like writing. The disadvantages are you don’t get to interact with the ones you’re marketing to, and if you’re inventing new systems, you could spend hours, days, years even setting it up only to find the system isn’t effective.

My latest system took three years to figure out how to create: a quiz. Mine is called, “Which Sexy Superhero Are You?

The goal: People have fun taking the short quiz, discover which sexy superhero they are, then share their results on social media for their friends to try. Along the way, they have an opportunity to sign up for my newsletter and receive a free short erotic story, “A Superhero’s Blind Date.” The short story introduces them to my Wonder Woman-type character and directs them to my erotic Wonder Woman-type novella on Amazon, in case they want to read more about her adventures.

Though it took a long time to set up, it may not work. I’ll let you know. I released it yesterday and got one newsletter sign-up so far, some lady in Denmark. Check out the quiz and, if you’re so inclined, please share your results on Facebook.

Let me know in the comments if you would like me to write a blog post on how authors can set up this list-building quiz for themselves.

Happy writing!
