Resistance is Powerful

is also experienced by most artists and can be overcome. Some people call Resistance: writer’s block or procrastination. Steven Pressfield names Resistance the heart of everything and anything that stops us from creating. His little book, 165 pages and change, called The War of Art: Break Through the Block and Win Your Inner Creative Battles, will rock your world.

From page 57, the chapter called “Resistance Can Be Beaten”

“If Resistance couldn’t be beaten, then there would be no Fifth Symphony, no Romeo and Juliet, no Golden Gate Bridge. Defeating Resistance is like giving birth. It seems absolutely impossible until you remember that women have been pulling it off successfully, with support and without, for fifty million years.”

From page 16, the chapter titled, “Resistance is Fueled by Fear”

“Resistance has no strength of its own. Every ounce of juice it possesses comes from us. We feed it power by our fear of it.

“Master that fear and we conquer Resistance.”

Read the book.

P.S. I wrote Steven a little piece of fan mail:

“Hi Steve, I loved this book, and am actively recommending it to all my clients, students, and workshop attendees. You’re fabulous, and a wonderful example to us all.

P.S. I’ve quoted you in one of my online articles and am mentioning you in another, “Who is Your Writer Self? Your Writer Archetype.” You can see them here:”

He answered:

“Thanks, Beth.  Being a bit of a Jungian myself, I like your archetype approach.  I’m a fan!

Thanks for the good vibes and keep up the great work!

All my best,

  • Beth,

I really enjoyed this article. When working with patients and in life, I have noticed that resistance is where all the energy or power lies. If you can face it, and be with it, it will transform into something wonderful. Yeah to not resisting resistance!

I’m also going to give your blog address to someone I know that will enjoy it.

Hi Kara, Thanks for the forward. And thanks for vibing with the message. Sinking into our resistance can yield great results in forgiveness, acceptance, and joy. Best, Beth
