How often have you journeyed off to some exotic destination and brought along your notebook, expecting to record your observations in prose so eloquent and poetic that it would forever change the perceptions and very lives of your readers? Or you at least assumed that the wonder you felt would marginally translate itself to the page, all that majesty entering your words through osmosis?
Over the holiday season, we all find it difficult to slow down and find time to write. When we do find the time, we have to resist the impulse to rush and fulfill word counts or time quotas without truly investing ourselves in the sensory and emotional work necessary for good writing.
When you make your reader question, they begin telling the story within themselves, seeking possibilities, engaging in deep and imaginative play.

Sitting down with my first student for the day, I open a new game, Zing!: The Bewitching Storymaking Game. We take turns placing words like magnetic poetry magnets, slowing creating a story of a boy playing violin as his mother watches scornfully. We gradually reveal her belligerence and anger.
