As a book publicist I am here to inform you that yes, they absolutely do matter! In fact, one of my clients won the prestigious Los Angeles Book Festival award. That then led to a flurry of media interest, which subsequently led to a major New York agent deciding to represent the book and pitch it to all the major publishing houses. You want readers, fans, and your potential audience to enjoy your book’s title. Alliteration can help that title roll off the tongue nicely. If your book’s title is memorable and fun or easy to say, people will talk about it.
Each year hordes of guidebooks are released from traditional and indie publishers alike, not to mention all of the self-published titles out there, and it can be difficult to sort through for the ones that are really worth your time. If 2013 raced by too quickly for you to catch them all, never fear—I’ve done the legwork for you. Below is my list of favorite writing-oriented guidebooks released last year.
Whether you hire an attorney (one who does publishing contracts regularly) or decide you are intelligently qualified to make some appropriate legal amendments, I suggest you BEST BEWARE the clause in your contract about Future Technology.

This past December, Fifty Shades of Grey was named as England’s Book of the Year. I’ll pause for reaction. Right. A book that while many may have enjoyed, was actually horribly written. The editing was non-existent, the plot and character development was horrendously flawed, and the repetition, my God, was frankly, just too much. But it won anyway and has also been recognized as the UK’s best selling book. They have J.K. Rowling and Charles Dickens, but yet, Fifty Shades of Grey still tops out.
