Are you writing a book or telling a story?

Your Gold StarDo you want to write a book, or do you want to tell a story?

Each one of these has a different motivating force.

Each one is not better or worse than the other.

Know what motivates you.

What motivates you? Having a message or creating a book?

Or, you could be motivated by the experience you want the reader to have when they read your story?

I like the meatiness of a book. I like reading a story that takes me hours upon hours to read.

As a reader, I like losing myself in my characters’ world and lives. As a writer, I like the same things.

What is the experience that you like to have as a reader, as a writer? They may be the same.

  • Great question! As a reader and a writer I like to meet amazing characters that fill me with love, dread, happiness, sadness and every other emotion you can think of. I love emotions in a story. The new world side of things interests me, gotta love fantasy, but not as much as the people. And of course, a story that makes me gasp!

Kurt, love it: “A story that makes me gasp!” Thanks for stopping by!

  • What a good question to ask, Beth. And I think it’s important to ask it each time you sit down to write, because (for me at least) the answer changes depending on my mood. Sometimes I like to get lost in a whole different life or era for hours and hours. Sometimes I just want a quick read – a quick laugh or smile, or maybe a short story that makes me stop and think for a few minutes. My whims as a writer vary, too. While I loved “living” with the characters in my novel for the years it took me to write it, sometimes I also just have a small tale inside me that I feel compelled to write down and share.

Jessica, I know what you mean! Your interests are as varied as they are rich.
