The Power of Mindset
Sabrina Schleicher, PhD, ACC

“The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.” Albert Einstein

Have you ever had the experience of feeling as though you are beating your head against the wall struggling with a problem? Maybe, you turn the problem over and over in your mind, looking for the solution. Yet, none of the solutions you come up with seem to have the result you are seeking.

As one of my clients who recently had a profound “Aha! moment” commented, “We all have the habit of thinking in terms of what we know, rather than thinking in possibilities.”  So true! We make up stories about what is possible based on our past experiences. Oftentimes, we overlook possibilities simply because we view our problems from a particular mindset. When we change our mindset, we change the way we define the problem and new possibilities emerge. That’s when those “Aha!” moments happen.

Have you ever noticed how the mindset of those around you influences how you think about your circumstances? Mindset is contagious. Surround yourself with people who anticipate the worst, who make decisions out of fear to avoid failure, and you will be fearful and worried much of the time. You will see limited options for dealing with energy drainers in your life and work. You might choose to stay “stuck” in a bad situation believing there are no good options for change.

Surround yourself with positive, upbeat people who see possibilities rather than barriers when challenges arise and you will feel very differently about your circumstances. In fact, you might even notice the wording changes (i.e., “problems” become “challenges”). Throw in a mindset of curiosity and you will experience the challenges you encounter as opportunities to learn and grow. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at what comes your way!

We make up stories about what is possible based on our mindset and past experiences. I challenge you to think bigger! Look for opportunities to have conversations with individuals who see the world differently than you.
