In the past 15 months, we’ve had 10 books on the bestseller list. When I say “bestseller” I mean major lists: New York Times, Wall Street Journal, et al. Still, even after numerous books and a variety of lists, the “list” itself still confounded me, so I decided to do a little research to find out what it really takes to hit a list.

As you may know, marketing is all about psychology. Most people think of the psychology of their readers because we must direct our efforts towards our readers’ needs and wants. While this is certainly important and I teach these ideas as well, equally important is the psychology of YOU, the writer.
If you want to publish your book, you need to think about sales. Many people think that writing and publishing a book automatically means a passive stream of income, passive revenue, easy money. But actually to succeed in the world of publishing you need to sell the book to make the money. And that doesn’t happen by itself. Here’s the bad news. Publishing a book and all that it entails is a business.
In addition to a website, newsletter, and a blog, authors can use social networking tools to connect with friends, make new friends, interact with readers, and gain new readers. In my previous Promotion Posse article (”Heart of the Bay,” January 2009), I wrote about how authors can use Facebook to network and market.
