Each year hordes of guidebooks are released from traditional and indie publishers alike, not to mention all of the self-published titles out there, and it can be difficult to sort through for the ones that are really worth your time. If 2013 raced by too quickly for you to catch them all, never fear\u2014I\u2019ve done the legwork for you. Below is my list of favorite writing-oriented guidebooks released last year.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Creating characters\u2026<\/b> The Positive Trait Thesaurus: A Writer\u2019s Guide to Character Attributes<\/i> <\/a>and The Negative Trait Thesaurus: A Writer\u2019s Guide to Character Flaws<\/i> by Angela Ackerman & Becca Puglisi (JADD Publishing, 2013)<\/a><\/p>\n

From the creators of the staple resource The Emotion Thesaurus: A Writer\u2019s Guide to Character Expression<\/i><\/a> come two new thesauri for your writing pleasure (I grouped them together because they\u2019re basically flip sides of the same coin). If you like your resources encyclopedia style, with little to no filler, both of these books are required reading for your character design. Each trait entry includes such useful information as associated behaviors and possible causes for the trait\u2019s expression. Together, the books are basically a human psychology primer for writers.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u2026and keeping them compelling.<\/b> Creating Character: Bringing Your Story to Life (Red Sneaker Writers Book Series, Book 2)<\/i> by William Bernhardt (Babylon Books, 2013)<\/a><\/p>\n

I picked this one because it helps linear thinkers design their characters from the ground up using such big-picture considerations as the desired character arc and how you can utilize your characters as metaphors. Each chapter ends with section highlights and writing exercises to hit home the major points. The writing style is clear and to-the-point, which is nearly always a win for me.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Conversational creativity.<\/b> Still Writing: The Pleasures and Perils of a Creative Life<\/i> by Dani Shapiro (Atlantic Monthly Press, 2013)<\/a><\/p>\n

I love the casual, straightforward voice of this memoir-craft hybrid. There\u2019s a lot to relate to in Shapiro\u2019s descriptive, often witty prose. She uses personal anecdotes to subtly teach writers how to improve their craft. The book reads like a collection of essays written by your best friend, so that the reading doesn’t feel like work.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Annual annals.<\/b> 2014 Writer\u2019s Market Deluxe Edition (Writer\u2019s Market Online)<\/i> by Robert Lee Brewer (Writers Digest, 2013)<\/a><\/p>\n

This tome would make my list any year, and not just for the extensive market listings for magazines, book publishers, journals, and the like. Brewer also includes a substantial section each year with articles on various factors of the freelance life, from determining how much to charge for each project you take on, to the craft of query writing. The deluxe edition includes a year of access to the (even more extensive) online listings. And there are more specialized versions of the book as well, if your interests are just in poetry<\/a> or in children\u2019s literature<\/a>, for example.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Down and dirty with the details.<\/b> Structuring Your Novel: Essential Keys for Writing an Outstanding Story<\/i> by K.M. Weiland (PenForASword Publishing, 2013)<\/a><\/p>\n

I loved Weiland\u2019s grassroots original, Outlining Your Novel: Map Your Way to Success<\/i><\/a>, when I stumbled upon it randomly via Amazon<\/a> several years back. Although this new addition isn\u2019t as concise as its predecessor (coming in at over twice the number of pages), it is no less of a good read. In Outlining<\/a>,<\/i> Weiland focused more on the methods for planning your book, while Structuring<\/i> <\/a>focuses on the more specific details of plotting on all levels\u2014story, scene, and all the way down to sentence.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Voice on the rocks.<\/b> Writing is My Drink: A Writer\u2019s Story of Finding Her Voice (and a Guide to How You Can Too)<\/i> by Theo Pauline Nestor (Simon & Schuster, 2013)<\/a><\/p>\n

By the title alone, you can tell this one won\u2019t take itself too seriously. Like a good lemon drop martini, Writing is My Drink<\/i> will give you the courage to express who you really are inside. It\u2019s a pep talk for creative types who need a little sip of loose-lippedness every now and then. If you find your muse running dry\u2014or even just shutting up in mixed company\u2014Nestor\u2019s metaphorical drink should get your fingers moving again.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Needing nonfiction.<\/b> Good Prose: The Art of Nonfiction<\/i> by Tracy Kidder & Richard Todd (Random House, 2013)<\/a><\/p>\n

I work mostly in fiction these days, so I have to confess that beyond the free sample chapters, I haven\u2019t actually read this one. But if I were to step more fulltime into nonfiction ventures, this would be the first book I\u2019d pick up.\u00a0 Written by an established author-editor duo (one of whom happens to have a Pulitzer) and published by one of the Big Five, Good Prose<\/i> gets an automatic stamp of approval. Its 45 5-star Amazon rankings are just icing on the cake. If you\u2019re looking to perfect the art of any sort of nonfiction, whether it\u2019s essays, articles, or full-length memoirs, this resource should have what you need.<\/p>\n
