Enjoy!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p><strong>You really <i>really<\/i> want to adapt your novel into a screenplay.<\/strong> It\u2019s visual, it moves, there are great characters, the plot is strong. But you really <i>really<\/i> don\u2019t have the time it\u2019ll take to learn how to write a different genre. (I\u2019m been a screenwriter for nearly 20 years with dozens of produced scripts, and I\u2019m still learning.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019re also not sure you could bear to make the kinds of changes it would take to go from novel to script.<\/strong> I don\u2019t blame you. It\u2019s hard to, as Hemingway wrote, \u201ckill your darlings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>So you want to hire a screenwriter to do it for you.<\/strong> But how do you know that a screenwriter \u201cgets\u201d your novel, and that they can do a good job of translating your vision to the rest of the world?<\/p>\n<p>Glad you asked\u2026 \u00a0Here are some things to keep in mind.<\/p>\n<p><b>Before you meet with someone:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Vet their credentials.<\/i><\/b> If they say they\u2019re in the Writers Guild of America, they\u2019ll be listed on the WGA.org site. Look them up on IMDB.com \u2013 the Internet Movie Database. It\u2019s a great site, not always up to date on credits, but at least you\u2019ll know if they\u2019ve been produced.<\/li>\n<li><b><i>Decide how involved you want to stay in the process.<\/i><\/b> Some writers may want to option your book. My advice is to not let them \u2013 it ties up the rights for however many years they want, and you don\u2019t have any say over what they write or what they do with the script or your source materials.<\/li>\n<li><b><i>Decide if this is going to be \u201cwork for hire\u201d<\/i><\/b> or a joint effort where you\u2019re going to send it out into the spec market together. This matters: WGA members can\u2019t do work for hire (it\u2019s against our contract) but we can do all the spec work we want as long as we stay attached during the sale. Non-WGA members won\u2019t know anything about this, so you\u2019ve got a choice to make.<\/li>\n<li><b><i>Ask what their favorite genres are to write.<\/i><\/b> We screenwriters like to think we can write anything, but that\u2019s no more true for us than for novelists. (We know that; we just don\u2019t want to admit it.) If your book is a romantic comedy, you probably don\u2019t want someone who prefers writing horror.<\/li>\n<li><b><i>Ask what their favorite recent movies are and why.<\/i><\/b> Same reason, but it\u2019ll give you an even better feel for how aware they are of the current market.<\/li>\n<li><b><i>Copyright your book.<\/i><\/b> If you haven\u2019t already, do it now. Not that a screenwriter would steal it, but it\u2019s always good to be safe.<\/li>\n<li><b><i>Give them the book to read.<\/i><\/b> This seems like a no-brainer, but I\u2019ve had people approach me to adapt their novel but wouldn\u2019t give it to me, and a verbal description isn\u2019t the same as the actual pages.<\/li>\n<li><b><i>Ask them to prepare a pitch about how they\u2019d adapt the book.<\/i><\/b> What do they see is the spine? Whose story do they think it is? What do they think needs to be eliminated? Etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>When you meet:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Be flexible.<\/i><\/b> The writer may have what at first glance looks like a cockamamie approach, but hear them out. They may have seen something you\u2019d never have considered.<\/li>\n<li><b><i>Be protective but not defensive.<\/i><\/b> Remember that they\u2019re looking at your book with a screenwriter\u2019s eye and knowledge. Discuss it with them, ask why they\u2019d make those changes, suggest other approaches or ideas. In other words\u2026<\/li>\n<li><b><i>\u2026collaborate<\/i><\/b>. That\u2019s what the movie business is all about.<\/li>\n<li><b><i>Trust your gut.<\/i><\/b> If you get a bad vibe from either the person or their ideas, walk away.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>If you want to work with them:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Ask for a one-page synopsis and\/or a short (5-page) outline\/treatment<\/i><\/b> before you make a final commitment. If it\u2019s work for hire, it\u2019s part of the deal. If it\u2019s a joint spec, then it\u2019s also part of the job. Then meet again and make sure you\u2019re on the same page.<\/li>\n<li><b><i>Put it in writing.<\/i><\/b> Set up the rules for the working relationship as well as fiduciary matters. Putting things like schedules, deadlines, specific rights, etc., on paper will make things a lot smoother in the long run even if you never have problems.<\/li>\n<li><b><i>Let them do their job.<\/i><\/b><i> <\/i>See what happens. Be prepared to collaborate.
