I\u2019m not the most economic with words I\u2019ll admit. I come from an Irish family who talk a lot, often all at the same time! There are so many of us that if we all took our turn saying what we wanted to say \u2013 we wouldn\u2019t get it all said.<\/p>\n

So as you can imagine, flash fiction – keeping it short, is an excellent discipline for me.<\/p>\n

Flash fiction has quite a broad definition but it\u2019s generally somewhere between 300 and 1000 words.<\/strong> Anything shorter than 300 words is often classified as micro fiction. However you\u2019ll find that every competition and journal tend to define their own guidelines for entry.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s lots of debate as to whether Hemmingway really did write the six-word novel \u201cFor Sale: Baby\u2019s shoes, never worn.”<\/i> But whoever wrote it, you have to admit that those few words do tell a full and attention grabbing story. Don\u2019t you want to know\u2026 Who? Why? How?<\/p>\n

THAT\u2019S what flash fiction does. It tells a long story in a few words.<\/strong><\/p>\n
