Enjoy this month\u2019s post on becoming a better writer by imitating other writers.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This month, I present you with an exercise in close reading, in which you\u2019ll study an author\u2019s style and emulate it to practice your technique. \u00a0Great pianists don\u2019t begin by composing their own arrangements, do they? \u00a0Likewise perhaps, writers learn by internalizing the rhythms and tones of those writers whom they admire before writing their own fiction.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Equipment Needed:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">A Favorite Book<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">Your Work-in-Progress (novel, short story, or article)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">First, open to a random page in your favorite book.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Let your finger travel down the page and come to rest.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Now, copy down the first complex sentence you see. I know this will be difficult for many new writers, as we\u2019ve all been lectured endlessly on the evils of plagiarism. Don\u2019t worry, this is just an exercise; no one else will see what you\u2019ve written.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">From the new <a title=\"John Irving, In One Person\" href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/WR7CEh\" target=\"_blank\">John Irving<\/a> book <a title=\"John Irving, In One Person\" href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/WR7CEh\" target=\"_blank\">In One Person<\/a>, I find:<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\u201cIt was Elaine\u2019s turn to blush, but Kitteredge, who was in complete control of the moment, had fixed his most earnest gaze on my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Next, you are going to analyze your passage and record four pieces of information: <strong>Wants, Action, Description, and Voice<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Kitteredge <strong>wants<\/strong> amorous attention from the narrator\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Action<\/strong>: Fixing his gaze.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Description<\/strong>: Most earnest.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Voice<\/strong>: Observant and anxious.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Finally, you will write your own scene for your WIP, using the same form and voice as the passage you chose, but using your characters\u2019 own wants, action, and description.<\/strong> Pay particular attention to the rhythm and structure of your mentor\u2019s sentences.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In the <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/WR7CEh\" target=\"_blank\">Irving <\/a>example, notice how the narrator\u2019s attention drifts easily from character to character. The commas set off these waves of observation, and the sentence comes to rest suddenly on the relatively soft syllables of mother, who in this novel is seen as a soft and easily malleable character.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In my novel, <strong><em>10 Dreams<\/em><\/strong>, I have an artist character trying to convince another to come out of hiding on a beach. In my imitation, I will use the same shifting focus technique, as my narrator worries about Kieran\u2019s intentions:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Kieran <strong>wants<\/strong> Curtis to leave the beach.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Action<\/strong>: Building a statue.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Description<\/strong>: \u00a0Dramatic pause, and a quick crack<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Voice<\/strong>: \u00a0Observant and anxious.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><em>My revised sentence:<\/em> Curtis\u2019s heart raced as Kieran, drawing his attention to the scaffolding, had paused dramatically to gaze up at the wooden figure before suddenly nailing two long boards onto the arms and adjusting them with a vicious yank and screech, into a wry satire of Curtis\u2019s Dream Man.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As a writer, I read widely and deeply, always seeking the eloquent phrase and the perfect details of characterization. It has been said that art is <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>10% genius and 90% perspiration<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>For writers, that 90% often comes down to practice.
