And be sure to comment below on how you design your workspace.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>It can be difficult to focus on writing when all you have is a laptop in the corner of the couch between the barking dog and your squabbling kids. <strong>We writers need a space that&#8217;s all our own<\/strong>, that places all our tools within reach and keeps us focused and inspired. <strong>Even if you\u2019re living in a small space, you can carve out a niche to create your own writing haven.<!--more--><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Location location location! <\/b>As a former manager of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.407apartments.com\/\">Orlando apartments<\/a>, I learned that location always tops the list. The same can be said for writers scouting spaces for their writing niche. Consider the following questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>What space can you sacrifice in your home?<\/em><br \/>\nDo you have an unused wall or window space? An empty garden shed? A place where a nook could be cut from the wall? A cluttered closet that could be donated? (See fabulous examples of closet transformations, including how-to\u2019s, at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.houzz.com\/ideabooks\/195082\/list\/How-to-Turn-Your-Closet-Into-an-Office\">Houzz.com<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li><em>What \u201cfeel\u201d are you going for?<\/em><br \/>\nDo you want an outdoor view, or a blank wall to block distractions? Consider all five senses. Is smell important? Position yourself away from bathrooms and close to the kitchen or outdoors. Do you need absolute silence? Look for a space far away from kids\u2019 rooms or common areas. Do you need natural light, or are lamps okay? If you\u2019re into feng shui, check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wow-womenonwriting.com\/41-How2-FengShuiForWriters.html#.URSjl1v63vc.email\">these tips<\/a> geared specifically toward writers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Tools of the trade. <\/b>There are a few non-negotiables you\u2019ll need to include in your compact writer\u2019s haven.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Desk &amp; chair.<\/em><br \/>\nThe size of your space will determine the size of your desk, but you\u2019ll need some sort of flat, level top to work on. A good old-fashioned <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_14?url=search-alias%3Dgarden&amp;field-keywords=secretary+desk&amp;sprefix=secretary+desk%2Coffice-products%2C279\">secretary desk<\/a> might be the perfect fit. If you\u2019re truly limited on space, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homefurnitureshowroom.com\/general\/wooden-mallet-wd17-21-fold-away-wall-desk_g750844.html\">built-in with a foldaway top<\/a> could be the answer, since you can fold the desktop into the wall when not in use. Best of all, a small foldaway is budget-friendly, as you can likely <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ehow.com\/how_12171092_build-folddown-table-hinge.html\">build it yourself<\/a>. But be sure to spring for an ergonomic chair that won\u2019t stress your body, preferably one that can be stored when necessary.<\/li>\n<li><em>Computer &amp; printer.<\/em><br \/>\nInvest in a light, sturdy laptop or tablet. Your typewriter, desktop computer, or stack of notebooks just won\u2019t be compact or portable enough for a small writing space. From time to time you\u2019ll need to print as well. Choose a wireless printer (preferably one with faxing\/scanning\/copying capabilities) so that you can keep it anywhere and still be able to print from your writing space.<\/li>\n<li><em>Storage.<\/em><br \/>\nYou\u2019ll need somewhere to keep favorite reference books, note files, and any other objects that help you write. To save space, go digital whenever possible, using online tools for tasks like note-keeping and <a href=\"http:\/\/procrastinatingwritersblog.com\/2012\/11\/procrastination-mind-map\/\">mind mapping<\/a>. Many desks, even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bjs.com\/fold-away-wall-convenience-desk---walnut.product.22328?dimId=2004939\">foldaway<\/a> ones, come with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Monarch-Specialties-Cappuccino-Hollow-core-Corner\/dp\/B0064CO9D2\/?qid=1354588698&amp;s=furniture&amp;sr=1-42&amp;keywords=desk&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;ref=sr_1_42\">built-in storage<\/a>. For particularly creative storage options, check out these suggestions for <a href=\"http:\/\/apairandasparediy.com\/2012\/05\/diy-bookshelves.html\">DIY bookshelves<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><em>Flexibility.<\/em><br \/>\nNow for the fun part! Are you a visual person? Do you like to use tactile outlining methods, instead of typing up notes? You\u2019ll need a flexible space behind the desk for scribbling (and erasing, and rescribbling) notes, posting inspirational photos or research articles, arranging and rearranging notecards, and the like. Great options for these sorts of brainstorming sessions include corkboards, chalkboards, magnetic surfaces, and marker boards. All of these materials can be costly and space-consuming, but there are some great DIY options that allow you to incorporate one\u2014or even all four\u2014surfaces into your space in a simple, cost-effective, and compact manner. For example, you could raid a crafts or thrift store to find a old window frame, then cover each pane in a different material yourself and hang the frame above your desk. If you only need a note-taking space, you could <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhg.com\/thanksgiving\/crafts\/simple-fall-crafts\/#page=11\">make your own chalkboard paint<\/a> to coat an entire section of the wall behind the desk, as writer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apartmenttherapy.com\/the-writing-workspace-of-one-smart-pop-tart-workspace-tour-179628\">Amy Lynch<\/a> did.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Carving out a writing niche doesn\u2019t have to be difficult, expensive, or time-consuming. <strong>The most important element is that it works for you and provides the environment and inspiration that you need to produce your best work.<\/strong> And if you decide to carve your niche out on the couch, that\u2019s fine too\u2026just invest in a lap desk, a back pillow, and some noise-blocking headphones!<\/p>\n<p>What would you design into your workspace?
