In this article, he offers useful tools and techniques for creating stronger characters.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p><em>I know my boyfriend is downloading internet porn with our rent money. I\u2019m afraid that my mother-in-law thinks I\u2019m low class because she suspects her son is not the real father. How can I tell my best friend that she needs to pay her fair share when we go out?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Who\u00a0hasn&#8217;t\u00a0had a delicate question that burned to be asked? Who\u00a0hasn&#8217;t\u00a0been ashamed to do so? For many years, Dear Abby was at the center of American consciousness and she fielded all sorts of questions\u2014from etiquette to morality to good taste\u2014that baffled us in this modern American world that was constantly changing, morphing, evolving.<\/p>\n<p>This exercise forces you to think of character and, through the back door, moves you into plot.\u00a0 It\u2019s simple, really. All you need to do is think about a burning question that your character\u2014major or minor\u2014needs to ask. What embarrasses them? What causes their lives to feel empty\u2014unfulfilled? What do they want revenge for? What are they too afraid to ask of their lovers, friends, family?<\/p>\n<p>You got it?\u00a0If you haven\u2019t been thinking of these things, than you\u2019re probably not thinking very deeply about your character.\u00a0This exercise, then, is an exercise of engineering; it\u2019s putting all the stuff into the character that will allow him to appear fully realized.<\/p>\n<p>Now, here\u2019s the kicker. <strong>Write a letter to Dear Abby<\/strong>. You know the form of the Dear Abby letter\u2014short and sweet and direct\u2014explaining the problem and seeking advice. Try to see if you can get the voice of the character in a missive that paradoxically is supposed to be cut and dry (i.e. boring) and also interesting. Kind of hard!<\/p>\n<p>Here:\u00a0I\u2019ll give you an example. I\u2019m writing a mystery novel about a guy who\u2019s a deliveryman in the garment industry of LA.\u00a0 He\u2019s kind of a loser\u2014an alcoholic who graduated Columbia University\u2014who has been paralyzed by his addiction, ever since his own sister was murdered five years previously. The novel opens up with the murder of a girl\u2014a one night stand\u2014who works in one of the design studios he makes deliveries to. As the novel progresses, it becomes clear that there\u2019s a serial killer out there, mutilating the beautiful young things who work in LA\u2019s fashion industry. Now, Robert is compelled to find the killer in memory of the girl he once had sex with and the girl he loved and will never forget\u2014his sister.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Dear Abby,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Ever since my sister died, I\u2019ve been wanting to get revenge on the world and been taking it out on myself.\u00a0 I know that this is unhealthy.\u00a0 And this alcoholism thing has been damaging my liver but I can\u2019t see my way out.\u00a0 Part of me says I should try to get into therapy but the other part says that I\u2019m not really hurting anyone.\u00a0 Is it okay if I\u2019m not hurting anyone?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Yours,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Counting Empties in Los Angeles County<\/p>\n<p>The final thing that you should realize about writing this small exercise is that engineering character also leads to engineering action.\u00a0 If you write this\u2014it\u2019s short so write it good!\u2014you should begin to divine the main conflicts.\u00a0 You\u2019ll also see the crisis.\u00a0 And you\u2019re gonna get a front row seat for the major plot points.\u00a0 So, get your pen out and get ready to spill your guts.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Khahn Ho, Author\" href=\"www.losangelesmystery.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"www.losangelesmystery.com\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7579 alignleft\" style=\"margin: 6px;\" alt=\"Khahn Ho, Author\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Khahn-Ho-Author-225x300.jpg\" width=\"158\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Khahn-Ho-Author-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Khahn-Ho-Author-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Khahn-Ho-Author.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 158px) 100vw, 158px\" \/><\/a><strong>ABOUT THE AUTHOR:<\/strong> Khanh Ho spent many years living in a small town in rural Iowa, teaching Creative Writing at Grinnell College\u2014a small liberal arts college, nestled in a windswept prairie whose distinguishing feature is the presence of a Super Walmart.
