Please welcome new columnist, Irish writer, Annmarie Miles. She’ll be writing about blogging and her writer’s adventures.<\/p>\n

I absolutely love my blog! The more I\u00a0realize\u00a0how much I want to write, the more I love blogging. Maybe it is because it\u2019s an outlet for this great desire. Maybe it\u2019s because unlike my M.A. work, I don\u2019t have write for anyone\u2019s grades or approval, except for that of my few but loyal followers.<\/p>\n

Blogging has given a voice to many aspiring writers like me. And it has given us a place and an opportunity to\u00a0practice\u00a0and get feedback, to share things that mean something to us and also to get involved in Global events such as the recent Blog Action Day[1]<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m really enjoying Writer\u2019s Fun Zone<\/strong>. As I\u2019m just starting out on my writing journey, not everything is relevant to me. It\u2019s great to know it\u2019s there and that as I continue to develop, it\u2019s one of the places I can go to for more help and encouragement. The 5 Day Writer\u2019s Motivation mini-course<\/strong><\/a> was great! If you haven\u2019t done it \u2013 I recommend it!<\/p>\n

I\u2019m no great expert on writing. I have been blogging for 5 years. I started to take it more seriously in the last 2 years and about 8 months ago I\u00a0realized\u00a0that I wanted to devote some real time and effort into developing my writing.<\/p>\n

When it comes to blogging, I have learned a few things that I wish I\u2019d when I started. If you\u2019re thinking of starting a blog, or want to be more organised in your blogging, you might find these tips helpful. I may be \u2018teaching my grandmother to suck eggs\u2019, but here we go…<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Think carefully about the title of your blog.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I changed the name of my blog a few times. \u00a0This frustrated me a little as I was trying to get people to read it and link to it. Not easy when it kept changing!<\/p>\n

The address of your blog www.etc,\u00a0doesn’t\u00a0have to be the title of your blog. So keep the address simple and then be as creative as you like with the title<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Decide how often you want to post and then stick to it as much as possible<\/strong><\/p>\n

I used to post everyday for 10 days and then nothing for weeks. Friends presumed I\u2019d given up and then… \u2018oh there she is… oh no, she\u2019s gone again<\/em>.\u2019 Now if I do feel like I have 10 posts in me I write & edit them all, pop them on the blog as drafts and then publish them in more regular intervals. By all means if\u00a0you’ve\u00a0got stuff to write… write it! But don\u2019t feel you have to post everything straight away<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Make sure to keep your \u2018About\u2019 page updated<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m always disappointed when there\u2019s hardly anything in the \u2018About\u2019 page of a blog.\u00a0I’ve\u00a0also read some that are wonderful but way too long. Treat your \u2018About\u2019 page like one of your posts. Keep editing it until it\u2019s exactly as you want it. (NB I\u2019m still not happy with mine…! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Use photos to brighten up your blog posts, but be careful…<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s great if you can find an image that illustrates a point you\u2019re making but you\u00a0shouldn’t\u00a0just search the internet and grab the first picture you see. You may get into some copyright trouble \u2013 even if it\u00a0doesn’t\u00a0explicitly say the image is subject to copyright. If you see an image you LOVE, ask permission to use it. The worse that will happen is they\u2019ll say no!<\/p>\n

And always<\/span><\/strong> add a caption or note somewhere on the blog to say where you got the image from, even if you took it yourself\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Read other blogs and connect on social media!<\/strong><\/p>\n

You\u2019ll learn a lot from other blogs, so read plenty of them. Leave comments, click the \u2018like\u2019 button and share blog posts that inspire & encourage you. \u00a0Make sure to reply to comments left on your blog. The stats report tells me that my blog is being read, but it\u2019s great to see that someone has enjoyed a post enough to leave their mark on it! \ud83d\ude42<\/strong><\/p>\n

Then connect with fellow bloggers on social media. Twitter, Facebook, Google+ etc. There are a number to choose from. Twitter seems to be the most popular and active for writers. So start there if you feel you can\u2019t do them all.<\/p>\n

My only other piece of advice… enjoy it!<\/strong> I certainly do \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
