Making a book trailer isn’t difficult, but the truth is there are very few book trailers I’ve seen that are any good. <\/span><\/p>\n

Many authors think the book trailer needs to show what your story’s about. <\/span><\/p>\n

The reality is that no one cares what your story’s about. They only care what experience your book will deliver. <\/span><\/p>\n

Too many book trailers I’ve seen spend the whole time showing the back cover blurb instead of expressing the emotional experience their book conveys. This is a series of articles on how to make a book trailer. <\/span><\/p>\n

Not just any book trailer, but a great<\/em> book trailer!<\/span><\/p>\n

What is a book trailer?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

A book trailer is like a movie trailer in that it\u2019s a form of promotion and shows the storyline. A book trailer is unlike<\/em> a movie trailer in that it can be shown before<\/em> the book is written, there\u2019s no dialogue, and there\u2019s no smell of popcorn.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why have a book trailer?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Author Arielle Ford wrote in The Huffington Post: \u201c\u2026in one minute or less you can tap into the visual, auditory and emotional senses of your potential reader with a book trailer.\u201d Also, YouTube is the second largest search engine. Are you listed?<\/span><\/p>\n

What makes a good book trailer?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. The promise of an experience \u2013 the viewer should feel the emotions that they\u2019ll feel when they read your book. The more emotional or visceral the experience, the higher the likelihood of your fans-to-be to buying your book.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Clarity \u2013 The viewer should understand what the heck they\u2019re watching.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Reviews \u2013 Great reviews are very convincing for browsing readers. In the text of the video, show a few reviews.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Call to action \u2013 This can be as blatant as \u201cBuy your copy today at Amazon.com!\u201d or as subtle as showing the word, \u201cAmazon.com.\u201d If you don\u2019t have a call to action, your viewer will enjoy the experience of watching the video and that will be the end of it. Give them instructions on what they need to do next to continue having that experience.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Good search engine optimization (SEO) \u2013 We\u2019ll cover that later.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The 6 parts to a powerful script<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Start with your \u201cWhat if?\u201d pitch. \u201cWhat if you decided to marry your long distance lover, then discovered she\u2019s on a hit list?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

    2. One short sentence or two summarizing your elevator pitch. \u201cOne by one, the 36 righteous are being assassinated and Nathan\u2019s girlfriend is number 36.<\/span><\/p>\n

    3. The title. \u201cFighting with God, The Death of the 36 Righteous.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

    4. Your high concept pitch. (Optional) \u201cA Jewish version of The Bourne Identity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

    5. Show three to five reviews. \u201cI could not put the book down!\u201d \u2013 Michael Connelly, \u201cBetter than The Bourne Identity!\u201d \u2013 Robert Ludlum, \u201cBarany\u2019s writing is masterful!\u201d – Lee Child<\/span><\/p>\n

    Place the pictures<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    Break up the sentences so that each phrase is a sentence of its own separated by a picture. Don\u2019t worry about what the pictures should look like, just stick them between each phrase.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n 3. Transition into elevator pitch – “Wife of Percy Besshe Shelley, friend to Lord Byron. And what if you learned the truth? The truth about her writing, the truth about her feminist beliefs, the truth about her lovers.”<\/span>
