(She let me say that!)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong><em>All stories need heroes<\/em><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Whether your \u201chero\u201d is a man or a woman, an alpha type or a beta, a child, an adult, or a dog, your story is about someone who\u2019s out of the ordinary. And it\u2019s your job to persuade your readers that your hero is worthy of their time.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">In the old days, the very old days, the Greeks and Romans wrote heroes with a capital \u201cH\u201d \u2014 epics featuring warriors, gods, kings and queens \u2014 but ordinary people were buffoons, the stuff of comedy<\/span><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As time rolled on, the idea of who could be a hero changed, so that by the 1940s or so, not only could the \u201chero\u201d be an ordinary person, the hero could have flaws of such magnitude that they could be anti-heroes.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Many stories are still written with kings and warriors as heroes, of course, and many heroes are more of the \u201canti\u201d variety.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><\/em><\/strong>Whatever story you plan to write\u2014a family saga, romance, thriller, science fiction civil war epic, or something else\u2014and whatever tone you choose to adopt\u2014dramatic, comedic, or something in between\u2014your hero must fit the context of the story. And he or she must be believable yet interesting, ordinary yet unusual.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Contradictory, much?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong><em>Every kind of story has room for a Heroic (in the Greek sense) hero<\/em><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Family sagas like <em>Dynasty, <\/em>thrillers like the <em>Mission Impossible<\/em> or the James Bond franchises, romances like <em>Gone with the Wind<\/em> all have larger-than-life heroes. And most readers or viewers can find something about those characters to identify with.<\/p>\n<p>The rags-to-riches wife of a smart businessman, the go-for-broke patriotic spy, the riches-to-rags wife of a smart businessman.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s the struggle or the success, readers and audiences connect with these characters.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em><strong>Are the constant tantrums and shoot-outs not your cup of tea?<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Spy stories don\u2019t all have to be told with flash-bang action. Think of John LeCarre\u2019s quiet spy, Smiley. LeCarre writes with just as much tension as the MI6 guys, but with a whole lot less of C4.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, think <em>Downton Abbey<\/em> as family saga, <em>Sex and the City<\/em> or <em>Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em> as romance stories but with more \u201crealistic\u201d treatments.<\/p>\n<p>(As for a realistic science fiction civil war epic, you\u2019re on your own.)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">That Heroic characters will achieve great things goes without saying.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><\/em><\/strong>But even in more \u201crealistic\u201d stories, readers expect greatness from the heroes, even if that greatness isn\u2019t flashy.<\/p>\n<p>Readers like characters who are at least superficially like themselves\u2014the characters with phobias, in-laws, lousy jobs, and neurotic pets. But readers won\u2019t stick with a book where the characters are too everyday. The hero may look like an ordinary person on the outside, but that appearance must be deceiving. However quiet and unassuming, underneath the guise of commonality, the hero must always be heroic.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">That\u2019s because readers don\u2019t want their reading experience to be like real life.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><\/em><\/strong>They\u2019ve <em>got<\/em> real life. What they want is to learn something new, feel something different, or gain insight into something they know.<\/p>\n<p>When readers read comedy, they want to see that (and how) the hero can laugh in the face of disaster.<\/p>\n<p>When readers pick up a drama, they see heroes who demonstrate what has value and meaning in a seemingly random universe.<\/p>\n<p>The hero in any kind of story leads by example, and if readers are to follow that hero to the place you as the writer want them to go, your readers have to trust that character, believe in him or her, and know that your hero has the chops to get the job done, whatever that job is.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Your readers have to like, respect, and admire your hero, whoever he or she or it is.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>They have to be able to identify with him or her, however you choose to draw that character and in whatever situation you place him or her.<\/p>\n<p>And you have to make your readers <strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">believe<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Even if you\u2019re making it all up.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Kay-Keppler_3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-4700\" style=\"margin: 6px;\" title=\"Kay Keppler_3\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Kay-Keppler_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"111\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a>Kay Keppler (<a title=\"Kay Keppler, author\" href=\"www.kaykeppler.com\" target=\"_blank\">www.kaykeppler.com<\/a>) is an author (<em>Betting on Hope, Loving Lucy<\/em>) and editor of fiction and nonfiction (<em>Asylum Harbor, Pragmatic Guide to Sass<\/em>) who lives in northern California.
