Henrietta The Dragon Slayer by Beth Barany<\/p><\/div>\n

If we readers love your characters, then we’ll go with them just about anywhere.<\/p>\n

Last week I talked about sharing the telling detail about a character through nouns and verbs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As writers, it’s our job to use language to have readers fall in love with our characters. One of the most powerful tools we have are metaphors and similies.<\/p>\n

A refresher from Dictionary.com:<\/p>\n

Metaphors<\/strong> “are\u00a0a\u00a0figure\u00a0of\u00a0speech\u00a0in\u00a0which\u00a0a\u00a0term\u00a0or\u00a0phrase\u00a0is\u00a0applied\u00a0to something\u00a0to\u00a0which\u00a0it\u00a0is\u00a0not\u00a0literally\u00a0applicable\u00a0in\u00a0order\u00a0to suggest\u00a0a\u00a0resemblance,\u00a0as\u00a0in\u00a0‘A\u00a0mighty\u00a0fortress\u00a0is\u00a0our God.’ “<\/p>\n

Similes<\/strong>\u00a0“are\u00a0a\u00a0figure\u00a0of\u00a0speech\u00a0in\u00a0which\u00a0two\u00a0unlike\u00a0things\u00a0are\u00a0explicitly compared,\u00a0as\u00a0in ‘she\u00a0is\u00a0like<\/strong>\u00a0a\u00a0rose.’ ” We can also use “as” instead of “like.”<\/p>\n

In my novel Henrietta The Dragon Slayer<\/em>, I always used\u00a0similes\u00a0that related to Henrietta’s past as a black smith’s apprentice. It’s what her subconscious would access. I wanted my readers to really “get” her.<\/p>\n

Some examples:<\/p>\n

Heaviness pressed against her chest like an anvil, preventing breath from fully entering her lungs.<\/em><\/p>\n

The old woman\u2019s voice scratched at Henrietta\u2019s ears like uncut iron being rubbed against itself.<\/em><\/p>\n

Her chest expanded and contracted like great bellows.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Henrietta grew up around animals in the country. I never really state that outright. Instead, I use references in my\u00a0similes. Here’s an example:<\/p>\n

He walked toward her like a colt unsure on its legs, but he didn\u2019t fall over and moved quite fast.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re as fickle as the mountain winds.\u201d Henrietta urged her horse forward.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I may have used metaphors in my novel, but I can’t find them with a search right now. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
