Part 2\" href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/18\/how-do-you-develop-your-characters-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">how to get clear on our character&#8217;s motivation<\/a>. If your readers don&#8217;t &#8220;get&#8221; your readers it is often because they don&#8217;t understand her.<\/p>\n<p>This week I want to focus in how another aspect of character development: the details.<\/p>\n<p>With details, you can relay a character&#8217;s voice, share a bit of back story, and create a sensory experience for your readers, so they can forget themselves and immerse themselves in your story.<\/p>\n<p>By details I mean concrete and specific:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>verbs<\/li>\n<li>nouns<\/li>\n<li>and their helpers: adverbs and adjectives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Make sure your details words convey a clear picture, specific sound, smell, taste or texture.<\/p>\n<p>Stay away from vague nouns and verbs that you can&#8217;t grasp.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding nouns and adjectives, which sounds better and shares more about the character?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>She wore a red dress.<\/p>\n<p>or<\/p>\n<p>She wore the floral print strappy thing she&#8217;d picked up at the yard sale.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For verbs and adjectives, which one works for you?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>She looked at me and pointed a shotgun in my face.<\/p>\n<p>or<\/p>\n<p>She glared at me and shoved a shotgun in my face.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What do you think about using details in your novels?\u00a0Thanks!\u00a0I love hearing from you!\u00a0We love hearing from you!
