Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Henrietta_Amazon-small.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2529\" title=\"Henrietta The Dragon Slayer by Beth Barany\" src=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Henrietta_Amazon-small.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a>I wrote about how I developed my character, <em><a title=\"Henrietta The Dragon Slayer by Beth Barany\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Henrietta-Dragon-Slayer-Kingdoms-ebook\/dp\/B004P8K292\/\" target=\"_blank\">Henrietta The Dragon Slayer<\/a><\/em>, in <a title=\"How Do You Develop Your Characters?\" href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/2011\/07\/16\/how-do-you-develop-your-characters\/\">my previous post here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today I thought I&#8217;d reflect on one of the biggest challenges I see in the manuscripts I edit, and even in some books I read: character motivation.<\/p>\n<p>If I can&#8217;t relate to your character, if I don&#8217;t &#8220;get&#8221; her, it&#8217;s probably because I don&#8217;t understand where she&#8217;s coming from.<\/p>\n<p>So some questions to ask:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why does your character want that thing?<\/li>\n<li>Then ask, what will having that do for her? To whatever surfaces, ask this question a few times until you get to a core fundamental desire: like safety, to be loved, to have purpose. (This question comes from <a title=\"What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming?\" href=\"http:\/\/nlpmarin.com\/nlp-introduction\/\" target=\"_blank\">NLP &#8212; Neuro-Linguistic Programming<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li>What specific life experience created that motivation for your character?<\/li>\n<li>What is the secret your character is running from and won&#8217;t admit to herself?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When I first presented Henrietta to my critique group, they didn&#8217;t like her. Really, they didn&#8217;t understand her. As soon as I showed where she came from and what she was running from (You&#8217;ll have to read it to find out!), and dropped little hints about her past, they &#8220;got&#8221; her and liked her.
