I Still Want to Write. So Why Can’t I?<\/h2>\n

I’ve been in a writing slump for the better part of 2026.<\/p>\n

I constantly think about writing<\/strong>, and it hurts more than it should because, for the longest time, I was<\/i> writing.<\/p>\n

I’m only three chapters away from finishing my rough draft, and this is when my motivation and discipline decide to take a nosedive.<\/p>\n

It doesn’t help that I’ve had a few added stressors.<\/p>\n

I lost my job.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I live in a country that isn’t my own, so figuring out visas and who to get them through has added another layer of uncertainty I need to navigate.<\/p>\n

On top of that, I’m starting a freelance business and learning everything that comes with it.<\/p>\n

Client outreach has become especially important<\/strong> because of my job situation, and every new responsibility seems to take me further and further away from my craft.<\/p>\n

Creating is important.<\/p>\n

For many of us who choose to live in the creative space, it’s the air we breathe.<\/p>\n

But when life throws rocks at you that you can’t simply bury<\/strong>, sometimes the thing that gives you joy gets tucked into a corner and left to collect dust.<\/p>\n

We still think about our projects.<\/p>\n

The characters.<\/p>\n

The setting.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The plot.<\/p>\n

The story.<\/p>\n

But the longer we go without putting meat on those bones, the more that little seedling of guilt starts to grow.<\/p>\n

Our untouched work gathers more dust<\/strong>, doubt grows heavier, and eventually our confidence and some of the joy we once found in creating — disappears.<\/p>\n

So we make assumptions.<\/p>\n

I’m not motivated enough.<\/i><\/p>\n

Maybe what I’m writing is shit.<\/i><\/p>\n

Maybe I’m not disciplined enough.<\/i><\/p>\n

Or, worst of all:<\/p>\n

Maybe I’m not meant to finish it.<\/i><\/p>\n

But what if we’re wrong?<\/p>\n

What if the problem isn’t the writing itself?<\/p>\n

Burnout Rarely Arrives All at Once<\/h2>\n

When life gets in the way, or when creative entrepreneurs start businesses and discover just how much happens behind the scenes to keep them running, the actual craft can easily become the last thing on their minds.<\/p>\n

Burnout can come from work, family<\/strong>, admin, marketing, querying, networking, client responsibilities, deadlines, constant decision-making, maintaining visibility, and the never-ending pressure to keep producing.<\/p>\n

No single responsibility looks catastrophic on its own.<\/p>\n

That’s the problem.<\/p>\n

It’s the accumulation of all of them that wears us down.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eventually, there isn’t enough time or energy to do the things that feed our souls.<\/p>\n

Instead, we’re barely keeping ourselves afloat, and that can slowly suffocate the ember that made us want to create in the first place.<\/p>\n

The Writing Becomes the Thing We Blame<\/h2>\n

With everything I already have to think about and all the decisions I have to make throughout the day, when I finally have some free time and a glimmer of energy left, the last thing I want to do is write.<\/p>\n

Create.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Because when I open my manuscript, I feel exhausted.<\/p>\n

I know more decisions are waiting for me there.<\/p>\n

What does this character do next?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Does this scene work?<\/p>\n

How am I going to connect everything?<\/p>\n

Is this actually the ending I want?<\/strong><\/p>\n

And sometimes, making even one more decision is the last thing I want to do.<\/p>\n

But the manuscript isn’t causing my exhaustion.<\/p>\n

That feeling was there long before I opened it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The book simply becomes the place where I finally notice it.<\/p>\n

The blinking cursor on the screen doesn’t create the burnout.<\/p>\n

Like an open wound, it exposes it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When Creative Resistance Isn’t Really Resistance<\/h2>\n

As a writer, I hear a lot about resistance, procrastination, discipline, consistency, and pushing through.<\/p>\n

And as someone who is also trying to build a<\/strong> freelance business as a creative, I’ve started to notice that there’s a difference between procrastination and depletion.<\/p>\n

I can avoid the work because I’m afraid of it.<\/p>\n

I’ve done that before.<\/p>\n

But I also know that right now<\/strong>, I keep pushing my writing back because I don’t have energy left to give.<\/p>\n

That doesn’t mean we should never push ourselves.<\/p>\n

Sometimes we need to sit down, open the document, and begin even when we don’t feel like it.<\/p>\n

But struggling to write doesn’t always mean<\/strong> you’re procrastinating.<\/p>\n

Sometimes you’re avoiding the work, and sometimes you simply don’t have enough energy left to give it.<\/p>\n

Sometimes you’re resisting.<\/p>\n

Sometimes you’re depleted.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Knowing the difference matters.<\/p>\n

The Cost of Carrying Too Much<\/h2>\n

So what happens to the creative process when we’re burned out?<\/p>\n

It doesn’t just mean we’re tired.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Burnout can look like:<\/p>\n
