their needs wax, wane, and change over time, or over an hour.<\/p>\n<p>Their needs carry multitudes, and apparently no one in the house can find the ketchup in the refrigerator faster than you.<\/p>\n<p>No one in the family has faith there is still ketchup in the house.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You abandoned your novel work in progress<\/strong> and march to the kitchen, pull out a broad collection of ketchup bottles, and return to your work.<\/p>\n<p>I am on call to help with home improvement projects, which theoretically makes sense since I live in the home:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">windows need cleaning;<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">closet doors need planing<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">blinds need dusting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>There is an acre of yard that needs<\/strong>, in no particular order:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Mowing<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Thatching<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">weed killer<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">moss be-gone<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">stick removal<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">stump destruction<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Meticulous edging.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If I am not in that yard helping, working side by side with my husband, I risk overwhelming guilt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Every time I squint through the dirty window<\/strong>, I feel compelled to drop my work and shuffle outside to leaf blow the patio, then clean the window, then all the windows. . .<\/p>\n<p>Until one chilly November day it dawned on me that home improvements, gardens, committees, family drama, children\u2019s needs are as unending as an Escher stairway.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t finish gardening, meetings, holiday prep, projects, meetings, or events.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We only press pause.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We can abandon them for a week or two.<\/p>\n<p>We can vacation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But they will always circle around and around<\/strong>, reappearing yearly, monthly, hourly.<\/p>\n<h2>When Creative Time Is Sacrificed<\/h2>\n<p>One morning I sacrificed (and I used that word specifically) my writing time in favor of mowing the lawn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not a big deal<\/strong>, I thought.<\/p>\n<p>But it was a big deal.<\/p>\n<p>Morning is my creative time.<\/p>\n<p>But THIS morning was mission-critical to my husband\u2019s fertilizing project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My job was mowing<\/strong>; his job was following me with the lawn fertilizer\u00a0hours before the predicted rainfall and the onslaught of hot summer days.<\/p>\n<p>Totally fine, happy to help.<\/p>\n<p>But the rest of the day just crumbled away.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The lawn was happy.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The husband was happy (as he scrutinized the yard for more things that needed attention).<\/p>\n<p>I was decidedly unhappy.<\/p>\n<h2>The Invisible Nature of Creative Work<\/h2>\n<p>One of the challenges of protecting our art time is that when we are in the throes of creating, it doesn\u2019t look like much.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Writers stare out the window<\/strong>, musicians repeat a chord progression, painters scrutinize a paint color.<\/p>\n<p>If you are composing a symphony, you are likely sitting still, which in most families is a trigger event.<\/p>\n<p>You are just sitting there;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">come help hang this picture<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">install this bookcase<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">wrestle this enormous desk through that narrow doorway.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The ask is not malicious<\/strong>;\u00a0it\u2019s a compliment that they want your help and, often more importantly, your company.<\/p>\n<p>And you are just as inclined to help because the activity is mutually beneficial.<\/p>\n<p>But that music needs you too, and once interrupted, that moment of creativity is lost.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tomorrow, and tomorrow<\/strong>, creeping into your time with little cat feet, and before you know it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Your sister calls to tell you she is leaving for a retreat<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Can you pick up the dogs at 10:00 AM?<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Be sure to lock the back gate<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Remember Fido is on a special diet of hand-shredded chicken and imported liver pate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How did this happen?<\/p>\n<p>Does it help to know that you are not unique?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Historically, female artists have pushed<\/strong>, resisted, and despaired about creeping and often overwhelming time encroachment (and now we share the problem with everyone!\u00a0You\u2019re welcome.)<\/p>\n<p>The process of making art just doesn\u2019t LOOK important (except for found art sculpture, which has the advantage of size, noise and fire: far more impressive than composing poems), and worse, we often\u00a0work directly in the line of sight (which is why those rooms of our own are important &#8212; out of sight, out of the way, unavailable for picture hanging).<\/p>\n<p><strong>It implies we are both ready<\/strong> and able to help with anything or everything.<\/p>\n<h2>Protecting Your Creative Time<\/h2>\n<p>But we are not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We are working on art<\/strong>, and yes, it is important.<\/p>\n<p>Assure your family you love them, but they are probably quite capable of hanging that picture themselves.<\/p>\n<p>They may also possess superior lawn mower blade sharpening skills, and just in case, all four bottles of ketchup are arranged like a firing squad on the first shelf of the fridge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Two things will happen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You will control your time.<\/p>\n<p>Fed up with waiting, they may just do it themselves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Remember to praise their good work.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Learn More<\/h2>\n<p>Look for my new book &#8212;
