The Scoreboard Is Broken<\/h2>\n

How do most writers measure success?<\/p>\n

Better yet<\/strong>, how do other people measure your success as a writer?<\/p>\n

When someone asks what you do, do you hesitate before saying you’re a writer?<\/p>\n

Because you know what’s probably coming next.<\/p>\n

“Have I read anything you’ve written?”<\/i><\/p>\n

“What have you published?”<\/i><\/p>\n

They’re perfectly reasonable questions.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

But over time, they can quietly shape the way we measure ourselves as writers.<\/p>\n

Most of us only count the visible achievements.<\/p>\n

How many words have I written?<\/p>\n

How many chapters have I finished?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Have I completed a manuscript?<\/p>\n

Have I published a book?<\/p>\n

Everything else seems to disappear.<\/p>\n

We become so focused on what society tells us<\/strong> a successful writer should achieve that we overlook everything happening beneath the surface.<\/p>\n

And that’s where the unseen work begins.<\/p>\n

Everything That Happens Before the Writing<\/h2>\n

When you’re a creative running your own business, the invisible work is everything happening behind the scenes.<\/p>\n

If you’re a one-person business<\/strong>, someone still has to send invoices, answer emails, manage contracts, schedule meetings, and, my personal favorite, the bookkeeping.<\/p>\n

I love numbers (notice the sarcasm?).<\/p>\n

That’s why I’m a writer.<\/p>\n

None of these tasks are particularly glamorous<\/strong>, but they’re necessary if you want your creative work to exist within a sustainable business.<\/p>\n

Then comes visibility.<\/p>\n

How do you grow your audience?<\/p>\n

As more writers build businesses around their<\/strong> books and creative work, marketing has become part of the job.<\/p>\n

That means:<\/p>\n
