Jump in to this interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiphopforthefuture.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Khafre Jay, founder of Hip Hop for the Future<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>Recently I had the pleasure of sitting down with Khafre Jay, an artist, educator, and community builder whose work keeps circling back to one core idea: creativity isn\u2019t fluff. It\u2019s a tool for survival, agency, and real-world change.<\/p>\n<p>We covered a lot in 34 minutes (including music, business models, community spaces, and the messy realities of making culture sustainable). (I\u2019ll be sharing another conversation we had back in February soon on the <a href=\"https:\/\/howtowritethefuture.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How To Write The Future podcast<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>What I want to share here &#8212; especially for my fellow creative writers &#8212; is what Khafre kept returning to: <em>make what fits you<\/em>, make it specific, and make it useful.<\/p>\n<h2>Who Khafre Jay is (and why writers should pay attention)<\/h2>\n<p>Khafre doesn\u2019t talk about creativity as a vague \u201cfollow your dreams\u201d slogan. He talks about it like a strategist.<\/p>\n<p>At one point he described a workshop he created for college students who don\u2019t see themselves reflected in the traditional pipeline:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt basically centers on taking your identity, your culture, something that you&#8217;re passionate about, and trying to imagine that as a job, as a business, as a company\u2026 What would that look like\u2026?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Even if you\u2019re not trying to build a nonprofit or run community programs, that mindset is gold for writers.<\/p>\n<p>Because the same question applies to us:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do you care about enough to keep returning to it?<\/li>\n<li>What do you <em>already<\/em> do naturally (even when you\u2019re tired)?<\/li>\n<li>How do you shape that into stories, offers, teaching, or services that actually fit your life?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Khafre\u2019s advice for creatives: start with what you love<\/h2>\n<p>When I asked what he would say to a working novelist trying to translate skills into service, Khafre went straight to energy and alignment:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFirst off, what skill are you the most excited about? What skill do you love the most? It has to be self-fulfilling.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Then he added a twist I appreciate because it\u2019s honest:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI really disagree highly with [\u2018Do something you love and you&#8217;ll never work a day in your life.\u2019]\u2026 I think if you find something you love, [you\u2019ll] work your fingers to the bone if you&#8217;re not careful.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s real. Loving something doesn\u2019t magically remove effort. But it <em>does<\/em> change the emotional math\u2014especially over the long haul.<\/p>\n<p>For writers, this can be a relief. It means you don\u2019t need permission to lean into what you genuinely love (themes, settings, obsessions, questions, subgenres). You can treat that love as data. A compass.<\/p>\n<h2>A practical framework writers can borrow<\/h2>\n<p>Khafre offered a concrete way to narrow the field when you have many interests:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cPick the top five things that you like to do and imagine which one you think will be the easiest\u2026 take the least amount of input, effort, [and] will be the most rewarding\u2026 And do that one first\u2026 because really it&#8217;s just order of operations.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Writers often get stuck because we have too many valid paths:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Which book next?<\/li>\n<li>Which marketing strategy?<\/li>\n<li>Which platform?<\/li>\n<li>Should I teach? freelance? self-publish? query?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This \u201ctop five + easiest-rewarding-first\u201d approach isn\u2019t about shrinking your ambition. It\u2019s about reducing friction so you can keep moving.<\/p>\n<h2>Niche isn\u2019t a cage. It\u2019s a power move.<\/h2>\n<p>Khafre\u2019s examples were vivid (and delightfully weird in the best way). He talked about taking a passion and letting it shape both business and art:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSome people think of just painting and how do I get out there\u2026 Some people think, \u2018Hey, I&#8217;m going to make my own gallery.\u2019 \u2026 It becomes fulfilling.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And then he brought it directly into storytelling:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIf they like pottery, write a mystery novel about pottery\u2026 there\u2019s shards of pottery with little cuneiform codes on it\u2026\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Later he doubled down on the same idea with another example:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIf you&#8217;re a novelist and you like knitting\u2026 make a crime novel that has to do with yarn\u2026 Make a sci-fi space knitting\u2026\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m sharing these not because you need to write \u201cspace knitting\u201d (though honestly, if you do, please send me the link). I\u2019m sharing them because Khafre\u2019s point is bigger:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your specific interests are not distractions.<\/li>\n<li>They can be the very thing that differentiates your work.<\/li>\n<li>They can create a demand you didn\u2019t realize existed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Creativity as resilience (and why it matters right now)<\/h2>\n<p>Early in our conversation, Khafre said something that stuck with me:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cCreativity is the only thing that is going to get our minds out of this kind of sleepiness.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you\u2019ve been writing (or trying to) in the middle of anxious times, you know what I mean. Sitting down to write can feel like an act of reclaiming.<\/p>\n<p>Creativity doesn\u2019t ignore reality. It gives us language, shape, and meaning-making. And for many of us, it\u2019s one of the few places we can still choose our attention.<\/p>\n<h2>One more craft gem: voice through embodiment and repetition<\/h2>\n<p>As a writer and teacher, I\u2019m always listening for process details\u2014the \u201chow do you actually do it?\u201d part.<\/p>\n<p>Khafre described a method he uses to write raps while driving: no paper, building line by line, repeating until it locks in. What struck me wasn\u2019t just the memorization\u2014it was how embodied it is. Rhythm, tone, melody, syllables. He said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYou&#8217;re not just writing the words, you&#8217;re writing the tones\u2026 the syncopation.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Writers can borrow this by experimenting with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reading scenes out loud (yes, really)<\/li>\n<li>Repeating a paragraph until the cadence is right<\/li>\n<li>Letting voice emerge through sound, not just meaning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What I\u2019m taking with me (and what I hope you take too)<\/h2>\n<p>Khafre\u2019s overall message to writers is beautifully simple:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI don&#8217;t think anything&#8217;s too crazy. [I] just think that we&#8217;re crazy to try things that don&#8217;t fit us perfectly.
