***<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe primary benefit of practicing any art, whether well or badly, is that it enables one\u2019s soul to grow.\u201d — Kurt Vonnegut Jr., American author<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Art Came Before Agriculture<\/h2>\n

On a recent trip to the Smithsonian in DC, I discovered this timeline —<\/p>\n

100,000 years ago<\/strong>, modern humans made specific tools for fishing and capturing dangerous prey.<\/p>\n

About 60,000 years later, humans created paintings and figurines; art.<\/p>\n

After 30,000 years of decorating the cave, humans got around to domesticating plants and animals.<\/p>\n

First, meat to give our growing brains<\/strong> more protein, next make art, and after that grow wheat to make crackers to serve at the next gallery\/cave opening.<\/p>\n

Cave art can be carbon-dated, but we can conjecture that even before cave art, 60,000 years ago, humans were decorating wood and cloth, singing, telling stories, creating and sharing dances, all of it necessary to build community, pass along traditions, and make sense of the world.<\/p>\n

As humans, we want and need meaning so much that we make it ourselves.<\/p>\n

We all are artists.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

And you share that impulse.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019m Not Artistic\u2026\u201d<\/h2>\n

But you protest, I was an accountant!<\/p>\n

My profession does not welcome creative interpretation.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Until yesterday, I didn\u2019t know what the A in STEAM stood for.<\/p>\n

How can I change my life with art if I can\u2019t do art?<\/p>\n

Remember How You Played<\/h2>\n

Recall the spontaneous activities you did as a kid.<\/p>\n

Did you play outside?<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is an entire generation that still remembers going outside to play.<\/p>\n

And what did we play?<\/p>\n

Mostly activities that risked mortal injury: cobbling together weapons from stones, branches, and string — concocting soup from\u00a0dirt and leaves (and if you convinced your brother to drink the soup, you were management material).<\/p>\n

We made things.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

We made up games.<\/p>\n

Even children inclined to stay indoors (the next generation) invented or explored.<\/p>\n

My children built a working trebuchet<\/strong> in the living room and leveraged that skill to build a giant slingshot to fly cans over the neighbor\u2019s house to the street beyond.<\/p>\n

Good times.<\/p>\n

From Career Back to Play<\/h2>\n

After you\u2019ve spent a successful marketing career convincing people to drink dirt soup, what is the second phase?<\/p>\n

If your play became your career, walk it back from the career back to the play.<\/p>\n

Reclaiming Your Creative Energy<\/h2>\n

We can\u00a0resurrect an art from our past in a new way (like playing the ukulele instead of the guitar or piano).<\/p>\n

Or we can go big and take all the energy and enthusiasm of our youth and reapply it.<\/p>\n

Why not?<\/p>\n

Answering the Call to Art<\/h2>\n

A good life goal is to wake to the call of your art.<\/p>\n

You ignore the ache in your lower back<\/strong>, that funny clicking sound from your knees, and hobble to your work — your art.<\/p>\n

Working towards a large purpose, the zone, flow, creates beauty.<\/p>\n

Your face glows with creation.<\/p>\n

All those minor irritations<\/strong> that drove former conversations?<\/p>\n

Gone with every step you take towards creating something bigger than yourself.<\/p>\n

When you are interested, the world responds by becoming more interesting.<\/p>\n

Embrace Imperfect Beginnings<\/h2>\n

Embrace the fact that all first attempts will be bad.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll throw out a lot of failed<\/strong> glass jewelry, or paintings, or shitty first drafts (thank you, Ann Lamott).<\/p>\n

Tossing out all those first artistic attempts can be more difficult than it sounds.<\/p>\n

Your instincts scream, don\u2019t ruin a perfectly good canvas with your beginning paint splashes.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t tarnish that beautiful notebook<\/strong> with a clunky poem.<\/p>\n

You worry about \u201cwasting\u201d propane and electricity to create a sculpture that looks nothing like the vision in your head.<\/p>\n

Yet, if you don\u2019t use your materials, how will you justify their purchase?<\/p>\n

How will you justify buying more? \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Start Small, Build the Habit<\/h2>\n

Take a deep breath, pick up the pen, and start.<\/p>\n

Work for 15 minutes<\/strong>, or as long as it takes to finish that first cup of coffee.<\/p>\n

Done.<\/p>\n

You may now go on with your day.<\/p>\n

Remember, you are building a habit<\/strong>, and you just accomplished that first step.<\/p>\n

Review, Reflect, Repeat<\/h2>\n

Return to the studio (at first, the dining room table) the next day.<\/p>\n

Review the work:<\/strong> Blue on the canvas?<\/p>\n

A better word in the poem?<\/p>\n

Start completely over?<\/p>\n

All legitimate responses and all reasonable as you evaluate and learn.<\/p>\n

Finding Value in \u201cFailed\u201d Work<\/h2>\n

After a week of learning, stop.<\/p>\n

How wet is that canvas?<\/strong><\/p>\n

How many cross out words in the poem?<\/p>\n

Is the golden-edged journal ruined?<\/p>\n

Good.<\/p>\n

Yet, maybe that first painting<\/strong> is not as hopeless as you thought.<\/p>\n

What colors did you use?<\/p>\n

Why?<\/p>\n

Is there a movement or moment in the painting that absolutely sings but can\u2019t come through because of its dysfunctional surroundings?<\/p>\n

Did you write an awkward sonnet<\/strong> as an experiment?<\/p>\n

Great!<\/p>\n

Is there a line in that poem that stuns you with its truth to power?<\/p>\n

Is there a repeatable metaphor?<\/p>\n

Did you line up a single weld<\/strong> that will shape nicely into a stunning arch?<\/p>\n

Save What Works<\/h2>\n

In the review of your \u201cfailed\u201d art piece, remove the great line, the perfect swoosh, the newly invented color, and save them in an inspiration file or box.<\/p>\n

What gave you joy?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

What have you discovered that is worth repeating?<\/p>\n

The more comfortable you become with experiments and with making art that doesn\u2019t work at all, the easier it will be to try new things.<\/p>\n

Save the pieces you like for later inspiration.<\/p>\n

As you progress and work<\/strong>, your own art will feed the generative process.<\/p>\n

You will become your own inspiration.<\/p>\n

You Are an Artist<\/h2>\n

The successful day is one where you worked on your art.<\/p>\n

Or played in the studio.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Or connected the green dot to the yellow dot.<\/p>\n

Say, today I am an artist because I\u2019m holding a pen, brush, harp.<\/p>\n

Making art makes you a member<\/strong> of the (somewhat dubious) artist club.<\/p>\n

Enjoy.<\/p>\n
