\"Craft<\/a>Let\u2019s welcome back monthly columnist Catharine Bramkamp<\/a> as she shares with us \u201cCraft vs Art.\u201d Enjoy!<\/p>\n

***<\/span><\/p>\n

The British philosopher R.G.Collingwood argued that \u201ccraft . . . is skilled work purposefully directed towards a final product or designed artifact; the craftsman knows in advance what the end product will look like.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the other hand, \u201ccreative artists strictly speaking never know what they\u2019re doing.\u201d —\u00a0 <\/i>Denis Dutton in The Art Instinct\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

Hobby or Art?<\/h2>\n

How is a hobby different from art?<\/p>\n

Dance as Hobby, Writing as Art<\/h2>\n

While I was on a writing retreat in Taos, (I have always wanted to start a paragraph with that sentence), my dance instructor called.<\/p>\n

Our troupe had been invited to perform at the<\/strong> Celtic Festival the weekend I was flying home.<\/p>\n

I would miss the Saturday dance, but had committed to dancing on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Long story, but the event stage had been reduced by a few feet and so accommodated fewer dancers.<\/p>\n

In the four acts of the dance<\/strong>, I would dance in only one.<\/p>\n

And to her credit, our leader\/instructor\/choreographer was very concerned that I would feel rejected by the modification.<\/p>\n

After reassuring her I completely understood and would see her on time on Sunday (flying home Saturday night) I considered the exchange.<\/p>\n

Dance is my hobby.<\/p>\n

Dance is her art.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We practice the Egyptian Cabaret style of belly dancing.<\/p>\n

Our performances fall into the fusion category.<\/p>\n

I love dancing, I love practicing and improving.<\/p>\n

I love the costumes and makeup<\/strong> (but have yet to master applying false eyelashes).<\/p>\n

During a family crisis, dancing saved me.<\/p>\n

Dance is important, just not as important as writing, which is my art, and my passion.<\/p>\n

The Difference That Matters<\/h2>\n

Hobbies are fun.<\/p>\n

Art is necessary.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And both can live in harmony.<\/p>\n

Purpose and Play<\/h2>\n

I love attending writing conventions and dance festivals.<\/p>\n

During a writing conference<\/strong>, I have goals, I want to connect with specific people.<\/p>\n

I often volunteer or serve on the organizing committee.<\/p>\n

I bring business cards.<\/p>\n

Dance festivals are very different.<\/p>\n

I love the beautiful costume on display<\/strong>, love the dancers and dances, and love to perform.<\/p>\n

But for me, the festival atmosphere is blessedly free of purpose.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s just fun.<\/p>\n

Fun is good.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

And far more entertaining than a conference packed with goals.<\/p>\n

Room to Create<\/h2>\n

Art needs space.<\/p>\n

In every home we\u2019ve lived in<\/strong>, I\u2019ve had a room of my own.<\/p>\n

Artists need space and often privacy.<\/p>\n

Hobby space is often more flexible.<\/p>\n

We would appreciate space for our<\/strong> hobbies but we won\u2019t languish without it.<\/p>\n

We won\u2019t get angry about it.<\/p>\n

We won\u2019t resent it.<\/p>\n

The Daily Ritual of Art<\/h2>\n

No matter where I am, I organize my writing space the night before.<\/p>\n

I need to wake with the<\/strong> coffee and computer all set.<\/p>\n

My son once commented that he remembered waking every morning to the sound of a keyboard.<\/p>\n

Deep Geek Knowledge<\/h2>\n

You know it\u2019s your art if you can go on and on about the history, the process and your own product without taking a breath.<\/p>\n

I love to ask my friends about<\/strong> their most recent art projects.<\/p>\n

I just sit back and watch them go.<\/p>\n

Because they will go.<\/p>\n

Once I asked a winemaker<\/strong> how the harvest was coming along.<\/p>\n

After half an hour, his wife touched his leg and whispered \u201cHoney, she doesn\u2019t need to know THAT much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wounded, he responded, \u201cBut she ASKED!\u201d<\/p>\n

I did ask.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I love to be with artists who can express their passion, want to express their passion, and deliver deep geek knowledge about their passion.<\/p>\n

When a Hobby Stays a Hobby<\/h2>\n

Deep Geek knowledge straddles the line between hobby and passion and could well push you into the latter.<\/p>\n

I study the Great War.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I own a shelf\u00a0full of books on the subject.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve taken classes.<\/p>\n

I am planning a trip to visit the trenches<\/strong> in France, all to better understand the art movements that followed the war.<\/p>\n

Studying WWI has become a hobby, but it\u2019s not a passion.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t own WWI stuff.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t need a whole room for the books.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Art and Identity<\/h2>\n

Like my dad who happily pivoted from introducing himself as a teacher to introducing himself as a film maker.<\/p>\n

How do you introduce yourself?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Your old position?<\/p>\n

Your former title?<\/p>\n

Can you introduce yourself as an artist?<\/p>\n

A friend was struggling with<\/strong> his artistic identity.<\/p>\n

He had been a successful conductor, it was his art and his identity.<\/p>\n

For various reasons, not the least that music is a difficult and slippery form of art, that role fell off; he hadn\u2019t been able to do the work for quite some time.<\/p>\n

Who was he if not a conductor?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

A hobby does not invite that kind of angst.<\/p>\n

Becoming Your Art<\/h2>\n

We may not be tortured artists, but we could be.<\/p>\n

We can identify as artists.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We can introduce ourselves in the context of our art.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s more fun that way, the conversations are more interesting, the ideas more generative.<\/p>\n

We rarely become our hobby<\/strong>, but we always become our art: that glorious obsession.<\/p>\n

The Second Act<\/h2>\n

What did I want to be when I grew up?<\/p>\n

A writer.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

What am I doing now?<\/p>\n

Writing.<\/p>\n

What did my dad want to be when he grew up?<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t really know<\/strong>, but when he landed on film maker, it was game changing.<\/p>\n

His last years were being and identifying with his passion.<\/p>\n

What a wonderful way to spend our second act!<\/p>\n
