the thinking patterns we\u2019re focusing on in this <a href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/?s=bailey+lang\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article series<\/a> \u00a0&#8212; affect our writing process in surprising and powerful ways.<\/p>\n<p>So far, we\u2019ve talked about curiosity and openness, and the roles those mental habits play in building a successful writing practice.<\/p>\n<p>In today\u2019s post, we\u2019ll focus on engagement.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Engagement?<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/wpacouncil.org\/aws\/CWPA\/pt\/sd\/news_article\/242845\/_PARENT\/layout_details\/false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing<\/a>, a primary resource for learning about habits of mind, describes engagement as \u201ca sense of investment and involvement in learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Your writing practice isn\u2019t a set-it-and-forget-it kind of thing &#8212; it requires you to put in the time and effort required for growth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Engagement encourages us<\/strong> to seek out new information and examine it in light of what we already know and believe.<\/p>\n<p>Staying engaged helps us integrate what we\u2019re learning and, most importantly, put it into practice in our own writing.<\/p>\n<p>You can think of your writing practice like a houseplant.<\/p>\n<p>It needs the right soil, nutrients, light, and water if it\u2019s going to flourish and grow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Engagement is what keeps you<\/strong> from neglecting the houseplant until it withers away and then wondering what went wrong.<\/p>\n<h2>How do Writers Practice Engagement?<\/h2>\n<p>A houseplant needs regular care if it\u2019s going to thrive.<\/p>\n<p>So does your writing practice.<\/p>\n<p>Engagement is a<b> habit of mind<\/b> that lends itself to taking external action quickly, which can lead to powerful results.<\/p>\n<p><b>You can start getting more engaged by reflecting on what and how you want to learn.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Simply checking in with yourself about this aspect of your writing practice on a weekly or monthly basis is a great beginning step.<\/p>\n<p>Some questions to ask yourself:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Have you actively invested in learning a new writing technique, deepening your knowledge of the publishing process, or exploring your genre?<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">What did you learn, and how are you applying it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You might decide that investing in your learning as a writer looks like hiring a book coach and reading widely in your genre.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Researching book coaches<\/strong> and getting up-to-date on recent releases in science fiction, fantasy, romance, and mystery is a great way to keep yourself engaged with your writing practice.<\/p>\n<p>Engagement often begins with reflection and ends in taking action.<\/p>\n<p>For writers, active engagement might look like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Developing a strong foundation of reading widely in your genre<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Seeking out or building a writing community, online or in person<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Taking writing classes or working with a coach<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Getting feedback on your drafts<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Looking for publishing opportunities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Engaging Activities for Writers<\/h2>\n<p>Getting engaged isn\u2019t about leaping into action.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s about taking thoughtful, considered next steps that you think will have the greatest impact on your writing.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a couple of activities you can try to start practicing engagement as a habit of mind.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Weekly Engagement Check-In\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Establish a weekly reflective check-in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This could be a few minutes of journaling<\/strong> on some basic questions, or an elaborate spreadsheet where you track different topics you want to learn about and what steps you\u2019re taking &#8212; the sky\u2019s the limit.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re just starting to think about engagement as a habit of mind, I\u2019d begin with something simple, like the following questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">What do I want to learn about writing as a craft?<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">What do I want to learn about writing as a career?<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">What have I done over the past week to explore the craft, my preferred genre(s), and my professional development as a writer?<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">What would I like to do over the next week?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>The DIY Writing Curriculum<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you really want to make engagement an active part of your writing practice, you could create a mini-curriculum for yourself (or work with a writing coach to build one and offer some accountability!).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Choose a specific topic you want to learn more about. Get specific: \u201cwriting fantasy flash fiction\u201d or \u201cself-publishing for first-time authors\u201d is better than \u201cwriting fantasy\u201d or \u201cpublishing.\u201d<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Establish a time-frame for your curriculum. Aim for a minimum of a month so you can do a deep dive into a topic.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Gather resources on the topic you chose. Search for a reasonable collection of books, articles, podcasts, videos, and other materials. Start sorting them into loose topic categories.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Design a course based on your resources and the topics you identified, complete with weekly reading and
