The Double-Edged Sword of Social Media for Writers<\/h2>\n

As writers, we use social media to grow our audience and sell our books, but also procrastinate by scrolling through memes for hours without realizing it.<\/p>\n

Social media provides valuable communication between us and our readers (and relatives) while also distracting us with notifications when Great Aunt Mildred uploads yet another picture of her cat, Rufus.<\/p>\n

What Is the Attention Economy?<\/h2>\n

In How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy<\/i><\/a>, Jenny Odell argues that disengaging from social media helps us to live fuller, more creative lives.<\/p>\n

So how do we disengage<\/strong> from the evils of social media without losing what makes it helpful?<\/p>\n

When Odell references the attention economy, she\u2019s talking about the way that social media demands our attention and then sells it to the highest bidder.<\/p>\n

To keep our attention<\/strong>, these social media corporations like Meta, YouTube and TikTok use algorithms to predict what we might like to see next and serve that up to us.<\/p>\n

The Emotional Toll of Doomscrolling<\/h2>\n

But does that make us happier? Well, when was the last time you finished doomscrolling and thought, \u201cOh yeah! That made my life better?\u201d<\/p>\n

If your answer was<\/strong> \u201cnever,\u201d then you might be considering why that is.<\/p>\n

Odell proposes that when we get trapped in a space that doesn\u2019t challenge our identities, ideas and abilities, we begin to descend into a spiral of boredom and anxiety.<\/p>\n

We need the challenge and the inspiration of the unusual and the new to keep us interested.<\/p>\n

The Power of Stillness<\/h2>\n

And, interestingly enough, that can come from simply sitting still and doing nothing but observing the actual analog world that surrounds us.<\/p>\n

Talking to someone face-to-face.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sitting in the park and watching the birds.<\/p>\n

Getting curious about something and going to the library to research it rather than just doing a quick Google search.<\/p>\n

The Need for Context<\/h2>\n

In order to keep us scrolling, social media attempts to keep us attached to a \u201cfearful present\u201d by requiring public knee-jerk reactions rather than allowing the time to find and engage with context around different issues.<\/p>\n

And we seem to crave<\/strong> context as we move through this time, as seen by the rise of the historian Heather Cox Richardson and her Substack, Letter from an American<\/i><\/a>, right after the publication of this book.<\/p>\n

This newsletter grew to over one million subscribers within a year, and all that it does is give historical context for the current political situation.<\/p>\n

That kind of reaction<\/strong> definitely gives weight to the position that the attention economy has left many folks starving for deeper meaning.<\/p>\n

How to Break the Social Media Habit<\/h2>\n

So, how do we break the social media habit?<\/p>\n

Or how can we engage<\/strong> with social media in healthier ways?<\/p>\n

Odell suggests that to get out of a bad habit, we need to replace the behavior with something else.<\/p>\n

Artists and Writers as Guides<\/h2>\n

\u201cTo me, the only habit worth \u2018designing for\u2019 is the habit of questioning one\u2019s habitual ways of seeing, and that is what artists, writers, and musicians help us to do,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s in the realm of poetics that we learn how to encounter. Significantly, these encounters are not optimized to \u2018empower\u2019 us by making us happier or more productive. In fact, they may actually completely unsettle the priorities of the productive self and even the boundaries between self and other. Rather than providing us with drop-down menus, they confront us with serious questions, the answering of which may change us irreversibly.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cThird Space\u201d<\/h2>\n

Odell suggests that one way of breaking out of this space is to start answering \u201cyes or no\u201d questions in a creative way as Diogenes, the great Greek curmudgeon, would.<\/p>\n

For example<\/strong>, if someone asks \u201cDo you want to go see the new Superman movie?\u201d you might respond with \u201cYes, but not at that cinema,\u201d or \u201cNo, but I\u2019d like to see a different film\u201d or even \u201cYes, but I\u2019m going to make fun of it the whole time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reframing your response in this way leads to more interesting conversations with surprising outcomes.<\/p>\n

Very different than what happens on social media as it tries to please you in order to keep your eyeballs locked on the screen.<\/p>\n

This \u201cthird space\u201d<\/strong> of refusing to answer a question as asked represents a liminal space filled with the potential of creativity.<\/p>\n

However, because of the focus on productivity within our capitalist economy, will, desire, and training are necessary to find, inhabit and remain in this \u201cthird space\u201d within our lives.<\/p>\n

But we can do it!<\/p>\n

The Practice of Attention and Meditation<\/h2>\n

The practice of redirecting our attention from social media to something else is similar to the practice of meditation.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve ever tried meditating<\/strong>, you know that despite your best efforts, thoughts will arise and drift through your mind.<\/p>\n

The trick is that, when you become aware of the thought, you clear your mind again.<\/p>\n

By doing this over and over, you train your mind to meditate.<\/p>\n

The same thing happens with redirecting and sustaining that attention.<\/p>\n

We realize that we are not<\/strong> unwavering but rather that, in the inevitable drift of our attention, we are able to continually pull it back to the thing we want to be focusing on.<\/p>\n

Do not judge yourself for failing.<\/p>\n

Rather, feel the success and empowerment that comes from returning to the task again and again.<\/p>\n

You are strong in your resilience.<\/p>\n

The practice of paying attention<\/strong> to something new is a practice, not a single task to be completed.<\/p>\n

Mindful Attention Over Mindless Distraction<\/h2>\n

So, after finishing How to Do Nothing<\/i>, do I have the answer for how to balance out those two edges of the social media sword?<\/p>\n

Well, this is what emerged<\/strong> for me after reading Odell\u2019s manifesto.<\/p>\n

My new intent is to engage with social media with as much attention as I need and, when I find myself mindlessly scrolling, to stop myself, put down the phone and instead interact with the people, plants and wildlife in my region.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve turned off the notifications so I can interact with the apps as I wish.<\/p>\n

Basically, I\u2019m opting for<\/strong> a mindful attention rather than a mindless distraction.<\/p>\n

After all<\/strong>, there are many, many ways to do nothing.<\/p>\n
