We need to know how to improve our work and understand if it\u2019s working for the reader.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s too easy for criticism to descend into toxicity.<\/p>\n<p>For the truth is: writers are timid &#8212; Critics are confident. Artists are built from doubt &#8212; Critics are certain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Critics love nothing better<\/strong> than to inform you of a typo in your handout or errors in your published book. (In a client\u2019s book set in 1876, a critic pointed out that barbed wire wasn\u2019t invented until 1879.)<\/p>\n<h2>The Sensitivity of Creators<\/h2>\n<p>Critics can be so righteous and terrifying that sensitive artists will simply stop making anything just to avoid confronting the self-satisfied censor and his negative comments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We will work over an essay<\/strong> or a painting until holes are worn in the canvas and book chapters lose all color and light because we are so afraid of the Critic, of making a mistake.<\/p>\n<p>That protection comes at a high cost. Our art is at stake, but how can artists cope when the entire internet is crawling with critics? Or Trolls.<\/p>\n<h2>My Encounter With the Critic<\/h2>\n<p>I was asked to create a class with very little turnaround time. At the class, one of the students arrived and the first thing she announced was she found a typo in the handout, the winner in a contest I didn\u2019t know I had entered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I thanked her for her effort<\/strong> and asked her to send me a list of the mistakes so I could correct them.<\/p>\n<p>She replied, \u201cOh, there were just too many to count.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, she had no intention to help, her goal was to publicly announce that she was right, and I was wrong.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I would like to say<\/strong> that this woman came to some appropriately poetic bad end, but I never saw her after that class.<\/p>\n<p>She was left to her fate, and I to mine.<\/p>\n<h2>The Difference Between Doing and Judging<\/h2>\n<p>I believe that:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cIt is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better . . . credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood. . .\u201d<br \/>\n[Editor\u2019s note: <a href=\"https:\/\/worldfuturefund.org\/Documents\/maninarena.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quote from Man in the Arena by Theodore Roosevelt<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><strong>What I have found is<\/strong> that those who sail, face storms, and risk wrecking their boats on a rocky shore are kinder to their fellow sailors than those who never wiggled their toes in the tide.<\/p>\n<p>When you understand the effort, know what it takes to create, and appreciate how much nerve you need to present your art or speak to a group, you are far more likely to support rather than criticize.<\/p>\n<h2>What Kind of Person Do You Want to Be?<\/h2>\n<p>And if you are critical just to be right, here is your chance to change.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you want to criticize, or do you want to dare greatly?<\/li>\n<li>Do you want to find fault or discover marvelous things?<\/li>\n<li>Do you want to demoralize, or do you want to inspire?<\/li>\n<li>Do you want to experience \u201cthe triumph of high achievement? . .\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And if not triumph, would you rather fail big \u201cwhile daring greatly?\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Daring to Create<\/h2>\n<p>When you write, you are daring greatly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You are doing<\/strong>, not watching.<\/p>\n<p>You are beginning something that no one else has ever dared begin, let alone see through to the end.<\/p>\n<p>Know that often the Critic is more timid and unempowered than we imagine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>They lash out<\/strong> at us because they aren\u2019t doing anything themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The only sure way to avoid mistakes is to stand still and touch nothing, and they know it.<\/p>\n<h2>Question the Critic<\/h2>\n<p>My upbringing by cautious, fearful people instilled in me a mindset of &#8220;don&#8217;t dare,&#8221; &#8220;don&#8217;t overdo,&#8221; and &#8220;don&#8217;t make mistakes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The worst messages<\/strong> to burden a creative with.<\/p>\n<p>It took me years to overcome all that discouragement.<\/p>\n<p>But I did.<\/p>\n<p>Most days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We all make mistakes.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I routinely abuse my friends by asking them to volunteer as beta readers for my books.<\/p>\n<p>They always confirm that I want them to circle any typos, grammar, or historical errors. (Or cooking, a friend pointed out a cooking error, no surprise.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>I \u200cconfirm<\/strong>, hell yes, and thank you.<\/p>\n<p>Once those mistakes are discovered, I turn the entire work over to my brilliant copy editor, who finds more mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>We try, we make mistakes. We hire editors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When faced with a scary critic<\/strong> (and they have learned to be scary, many are bullies as well), question their legitimacy.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Is the critic a fellow sailor?<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Has this critic done what you\u2019ve done?<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Has he or she written a book?<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Submitted poems?<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Daily bled onto the page?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because if not, well. . . .<\/p>\n<h2>You Have Already Won<\/h2>\n<p>If you create, you have already won.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your daring and effort<\/strong> guarantee that your \u201cplace shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When a person is busy finding your mistakes, they don\u2019t leave time to make their own. That is a terribly cold place to live.<\/p>\n<h2><i>The Man in the Arena<\/i> &#8211; delivered by Theodore Roosevelt<\/h2>\n<p>It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.<br \/>\nThe credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly;<br \/>\nwho errs, who comes short again and again,<br \/>\nbecause there is no effort without error and shortcoming;<br \/>\nbut who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause;<br \/>\nwho at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails,<br \/>\nat least fails while daring greatly,<br \/>\nso that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls<br \/>\nwho neither know victory nor defeat.<br \/>\n&#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/worldfuturefund.org\/Documents\/maninarena.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Theodore Roosevelt &#8211; The Man in the Arena<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Get Involved<\/h2>\n<p>I need your help!
