Drowning in Knowledge, Yet Still Anxious<\/b><\/h2>\n

I\u2019ve attended and watched countless writing workshops and classes: Show vs. Tell<\/i>, How to Get Out of Your Own Way<\/i>, 5 Steps to Edit Your Book<\/i>, 5 Ways to Create a Unique and Compelling Backstory<\/i>; the list goes on. You\u2019d think that after absorbing all this knowledge, I wouldn\u2019t feel a surge of anxiety every time the blinking cursor stares back at me.<\/p>\n

The Overthinker\u2019s Trap<\/b><\/h2>\n

There\u2019s so much information out there that it can feel limitless. And when you\u2019re a natural overthinker, it\u2019s hard to figure out how to apply analytical solutions to something as fluid and intuitive as creativity. Like trying to force opposite magnets together, it just doesn\u2019t connect.<\/p>\n

Yes, analytical thinking has its place, especially in editing, but when there\u2019s no clear blueprint for getting from point A to point Z, it\u2019s easy to lose your inner voice. The one that instinctively knows what needs to come next.<\/p>\n

The Relief of Realization<\/b><\/h2>\n

Then, one day while sifting through the internet, I stumbled across something that made me pause, and exhale.<\/p>\n

Writing isn\u2019t meant to be easy.<\/i><\/p>\n

I\u2019d suspected that. It never felt easy for me. But another quote popped up that really hit me: \u201cIf you\u2019re having fun while writing, you\u2019re doing it wrong.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Isn\u2019t Writing Supposed to Be Fun?<\/b><\/h2>\n

I always thought it was supposed to be fun. I\u2019ve heard bestselling authors talk about how much they enjoy<\/i> the process, so I just assumed that would be the case for me too.<\/p>\n

Hard? Sure. But fun, wasn\u2019t that the reward?<\/p>\n

Reading that line gave me unexpected relief. Because honestly? I wasn\u2019t having fun. Not all the time. Yes, there are moments of excitement, joy, even thrill, but a lot of it is uncomfortable. And now I understood why.<\/p>\n

Complexity Is the Goal<\/b><\/h2>\n

Writing isn\u2019t meant to be easy because it\u2019s full of contradictions. It forces you to think, to examine, to wrestle with ideas that don\u2019t always want to cooperate. That kind of mental and emotional effort reveals complexity, and with complexity comes challenge.<\/p>\n

The Emotional Toll of Honesty<\/b><\/h2>\n

If you want to write something honest, something that resonates, you have to dig deep. Into your characters, yes, but especially into yourself. That kind of vulnerability isn\u2019t just risky. It can be painful. Cathartic later, sure,but in the moment? It can feel like exposing wounds you didn\u2019t know were still open.<\/p>\n

But here\u2019s the beautiful part: as your characters grow, you grow with them. If you\u2019re not evolving through the writing process, maybe you\u2019re not doing it right.<\/p>\n

Effort Doesn\u2019t Equal Failure<\/b><\/h2>\n

We tend to believe that if something is easy, it means we\u2019re doing well. That we\u2019re on the right path. But with writing, it\u2019s the opposite. The effort is what makes it meaningful. The struggle is what creates depth.<\/p>\n

Let It Simmer<\/b><\/h2>\n

You can\u2019t rush a book. You can\u2019t force connections that aren\u2019t there yet. It has to marinate in your mind, slowly, and intentionally, until all the pieces come together. When you rush it, you end up with scattered moments instead of a cohesive story.<\/p>\n

The Shift from Fun to Fulfillment<\/b><\/h2>\n

When you first thought of your book idea, did you think: This will be fun to write<\/i>?
\nThat\u2019s how I started, too.<\/p>\n

But now, I\u2019m more intentional.<\/p>\n

I begin with the understanding that this will take time. That the flow won\u2019t always be there. That effort will be required.<\/p>\n

Because nothing worth having is meant to be easy.
\nAnd this? This is worth it.<\/p>\n
