How often do you talk about your book?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Do you avoid sharing it because you\u2019re afraid of judgement?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s normal to be nervous about people\u2019s reactions, but I guarantee you are not talking about your book as much as you can be.<\/p>\n

Talking about your writing journey is important.<\/p>\n

It shows people what you\u2019re passionate about<\/strong>. It lets them into your world and allows them to be excited with you.<\/p>\n

Always assume that people are hearing you talk about your writing for the first time, every time.<\/p>\n

People are bombarded with so much information daily, that they need repetition to remember which books they wanted to buy.<\/p>\n

You might assume you\u2019ve already told<\/strong> a certain loved one about your book, but how much did you actually say?<\/p>\n

The Hurt Reaction<\/b><\/h2>\n

I\u2019ll give you the perfect example from my life.<\/p>\n

I was at a family dinner<\/strong>, and eventually the conversation gave me the opportunity to mention my writing.<\/p>\n

I had recently started writing the first draft of my health memoir and I wanted to celebrate that!<\/p>\n

When I shared this information, one of my family members said, \u201cMemoir? You can\u2019t write a memoir, you\u2019re not dead!\u201d<\/p>\n

How could they not know<\/strong> that I was writing a health memoir?<\/p>\n

A different family member had been encouraging me to do it since 2020.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been outlining the journey for over three years now, recalling the events of my dislocated kneecap and cancer diagnosis.<\/p>\n

So, how did this family member not know?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My instinct was to make a sarcastic joke in response. I said, \u201cDead people can\u2019t write anyways!\u201d<\/p>\n

Sometimes when I\u2019m hurt I can\u2019t think of a good thing to say, and by the time I figure it out, the conversation moves on to something completely different.<\/p>\n

Luckily<\/strong>, my brain processed the information faster than usual.<\/p>\n

Instead of sulking silently, I explained the difference between memoirs, which shares one piece of someone\u2019s life, and an autobiography, which shares the entirety of someone\u2019s life.<\/p>\n

Though I didn\u2019t get a chance to explain why I was writing my health memoir, I\u2019m glad I spoke up and shared more than I normally would.<\/p>\n

The more I thought about it<\/strong>, the more I realized I hadn\u2019t spoken to this particular person about my plans to write a memoir.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d talked to them a lot about the one I helped a friend write, called Escaping to Freedom<\/i>, but how much had I mentioned the plan to write my own?<\/p>\n

I may have said it in passing once or twice, but not enough to truly show how serious I was about using my story to inspire others.<\/p>\n

I made an assumption about<\/strong> what I had told them and how much information they had retained.<\/p>\n

People have busy lives, and they can\u2019t always remember everything that you\u2019re up to.<\/p>\n

3 Tips for Talking About Your Book<\/b><\/h2>\n

If you want more practice speaking with people in your life about your book, try these:<\/p>\n

Tip 1 — Ask Questions
\n<\/b><\/h3>\n

With any conversation, sometimes people don\u2019t have the capacity to fully engage with you. Before you go into a full description of your book, ask questions.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey, can I tell you about the book I\u2019m currently writing?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat have I told you so far about my latest book?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I practice pitching my book synopsis to you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Asking permission before you begin ensures people are more present in your conversation, therefore more likely to retain the information.<\/p>\n

Tip 2 — Speak with Confidence<\/b><\/h3>\n

Your book deserves your highest level of excitement.<\/p>\n

Plan out a few key points that you want to mention every time you talk about your book.<\/p>\n

Practicing this will reduce the amount of times you fumble over your words.<\/p>\n

When you share your book with happiness, that energy will be reciprocated when you\u2019re talking to your loved ones.<\/p>\n

Even if they don\u2019t read your genre, they love you, and knowing that you\u2019re happy will also make them happy.<\/p>\n

Tip 3 — Handle Criticism Respectfully
\n<\/b><\/h3>\n

When you\u2019re in the mood to celebrate, you are not<\/i> in the mood for criticism.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, some people like to share criticism whether you ask for it or not.<\/p>\n

If it\u2019s a loved one, it\u2019s usually coming from a good place. They want to help in the best way they know how.<\/p>\n

But sometimes you only need a cheerleader, who offers 100% support.<\/p>\n

During times of unsolicited criticism, try not to react in anger.<\/p>\n

Practice a standard line you share when you want to calmly and respectfully reject the criticism, and end the conversation with that person.<\/p>\n

Try something like:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s okay if you can\u2019t celebrate with me, but I would appreciate it if you withheld your criticism.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI appreciate that you care enough to want to help! When I\u2019m ready for constructive criticism, I know I can count on you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Keep Moving Forward
\n<\/b><\/h2>\n

Never stop talking about your books and writing experiences, because this is your passion.<\/p>\n

Sharing this lets people know<\/strong> what you\u2019re up to and gives you more practice and confidence for when you talk to book agents, publishers, or readers at book conventions.<\/p>\n

Whenever you think you\u2019ve talked about it enough, talk about it more. You never know what people remember about your book, and sometimes they need a reminder!<\/p>\n

Even if you are talking about your book \u201ctoo much,\u201d the ones who love you won\u2019t stop you.<\/p>\n

They will enjoy hearing how passionate you<\/strong> are and feel happy as you light up talking about your work.<\/p>\n

So, keep talking, keep writing, and\u2026<\/p>\n

Never forget that you are worthy!<\/p>\n
