How many writers out there love to learn?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Love to research?<\/p>\n

You love to spend hours immersing yourself in a topic whether to include the information in a new book or for your own enjoyment.<\/p>\n

Maybe you\u2019re looking to learn a new writing technique and want to know as much as possible to succeed in this new skill.<\/p>\n

The pitfall we face when researching<\/strong> and learning is knowing how much is enough.<\/p>\n

It can be easy to fall down the rabbit hole and get overwhelmed by all this information.<\/p>\n

You question how much of an expert you need to be so that the elements of your story are believable and that you feel confident in your knowledge.<\/p>\n

When these overwhelmed feelings are dragging you down, here are four steps to set yourself up for success:<\/p>\n

Step 1: Ask One Question<\/b><\/h2>\n

As a writer, it may feel like you have to be an expert in every career your character has or every marketing strategy out there to promote your book.<\/p>\n

The truth is that you just have to know<\/strong> what specific details are going to work for you and your story.<\/p>\n

Ask yourself: what type of information am I looking for?<\/p>\n

What\u2019s ONE specific question that I want answered?<\/p>\n

When you narrow it down to one specific area, you limit how many resources you need to get the answers you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n

Plus, it gives you a deadline<\/strong>, so you can avoid a research rabbit hole.<\/p>\n

Once you have the answer to your question, you can move on to something new.<\/p>\n

Some questions you may want answered include:<\/p>\n

What does a typical day look like for my character in their career?<\/p>\n

What\u2019s ONE strategy to market myself on Instagram?<\/p>\n

How do I be productive when<\/strong> I only have five minutes to write?<\/p>\n

Though these are just a few topics you can explore, the possibilities are endless!<\/p>\n

Step 2: Connect the Information
\n<\/b><\/h2>\n

Make a list of the resource titles (with links so you can easily find it again).<\/p>\n

You\u2019re not diving deep into these resources yet<\/strong>, you\u2019re just compiling a list of potential options.<\/p>\n

Each time you find a resource, ask yourself: will it give me the information I need?<\/p>\n

While deciding which resources to use, it\u2019s important to understand if this resource (i.e. blog post, book, writing course) directly relates to the questions you\u2019re trying to answer.<\/p>\n

If all you need to know is how a doctor preps for surgery, you don\u2019t have to research every single thing about performing surgery.<\/p>\n

If your marketing strategy is focused<\/strong> on Instagram<\/strong>, you wouldn\u2019t look at articles about Facebook.<\/p>\n

Focus on what\u2019s most relevant to you and the current topic you\u2019re researching.<\/p>\n

Before diving deep into a podcast episode or website blog, read the title and description–if there is one.<\/p>\n

That way you\u2019ll know if it\u2019ll be worth your time to explore<\/strong>, or if you can move on to the next resource.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a BIG time saver when you narrow your search.<\/p>\n

Step 3: Choose 3 Resources<\/b><\/h2>\n

Once you have your list of potential resources (aim for about ten total), choose THREE from the list.<\/p>\n

This helps you avoid the overwhelm<\/strong> of trying to consume every possible piece of information.<\/p>\n

Look at the titles of the resources.<\/p>\n

Which items directly relate to the question you want answered?<\/p>\n

For example, if you want to know more about reels on Instagram and the title of a resource is about understanding post analytics, you can skip that resource for now.<\/p>\n

Choose three of the most relevant<\/strong> resources as your starting point.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t delete your list yet, as you might need to come back to it later.<\/p>\n

It may not be useful for the current topic, but it might come in handy for something else and save you time searching for the same things.<\/p>\n

Depending on how much detail you need, you may not require more than three resources.<\/p>\n

If your topic is common<\/strong>, you\u2019ll find a lot of repeat information anyway.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s better to find the information you need and move forward, than to feed the fear that you\u2019re missing something.<\/p>\n

Step 4: Consume the Information<\/b><\/h2>\n

Now that you\u2019ve chosen your three relevant resources, it\u2019s time to do the deep dive.<\/p>\n

Read or listen to it in its entirety<\/strong>, noting the most relevant information to your question.<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve collected all the important information, review it to see if you have answered your question.<\/p>\n

If yes, perfect!<\/p>\n

Nothing more to research.<\/p>\n

If not, ask yourself<\/strong>: what am I missing?<\/p>\n

Is what I\u2019m missing directly related to the question I\u2019m asking, or will it take me down another research rabbit hole?<\/p>\n

Understanding that distinction can help you decide if you\u2019re ready to stop researching or you really do need more information.<\/p>\n

Go back through your resource list and choose ONE more.<\/p>\n

After you\u2019ve collected the information<\/strong> from that research, ask yourself: what am I missing?<\/p>\n

Is what I\u2019m missing directly related to the question I\u2019m asking, or will it take me down another research rabbit hole?<\/p>\n

Repeat this process until you have everything you need to answer that ONE specific question.<\/p>\n

Step 5:<\/b>\u00a0Avoid the Research Rabbit Hole
\n<\/b><\/h2>\n

It\u2019s easy to feel like you need to know every single thing on a topic before you can move forward, but that holds back your momentum. It keeps you stuck in one stage of the writing process.<\/p>\n

You only need a few key resource<\/strong>s to help you answer your question.<\/p>\n

Focus on the key themes and keep your progress going.<\/p>\n
