\"Five<\/a>Let\u2019s welcome back Laurel Osterkamp<\/a> as she shares with us \u201cFive Tropes to Avoid.\u201d Enjoy!<\/p>\n

***<\/p>\n

Recently, an author friend of mine was miffed<\/strong> when a line from his novel got edited out: I released a breath I didn\u2019t know I was holding.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cSure,\u201d I told him. \u201cI belong to lots of fiction-related Facebook groups, and readers hate that line. They think it\u2019s overused and cliche.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another thing that\u2019s overused? Tropes. Authors employ them to add interest, depth, and familiarity to a story.<\/p>\n

Except, some readers see tropes as cheating<\/strong> — a way to quickly provide exposition without adding any substance.<\/p>\n

Or, they might feel manipulated by tropes \u2013 like they should have a strong and specific emotional reaction.<\/p>\n

What can you do?<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not suggesting that we should stop using tropes altogether<\/strong>.\u00a0 Just be aware of the ones that have become overused or even cancelled.<\/p>\n

Here are five you might want to avoid:<\/p>\n

1. The Chosen One<\/b><\/h2>\n

In many fantasy and science fiction stories, the main character is believed to have special powers or abilities, making them the only one who can save the world from destruction.<\/p>\n

Think Harry Potter, The Hunger Game<\/i>s, and The Matrix<\/i><\/strong>. While this trope can be effective in creating a sense of destiny and purpose for the main character, it\u2019s been overused to the point of predictability.<\/p>\n

Think about it: The main character is an underdog who discovers their extraordinary abilities and goes on a journey to defeat a powerful enemy.<\/p>\n

While they\u2019re a reluctant hero<\/strong>, there\u2019s never any doubt that they\u2019ll step up and ultimately prevail.<\/p>\n

2. The Love Triangle<\/b><\/h2>\n

The love triangle is a staple in many romances and YA. It involves romantic relationships between the main character and two potential love interests, creating tension and conflict.<\/p>\n

Think Twilight, The Vampire Diaries<\/i><\/strong>, and The Selection<\/i> series.<\/p>\n

The main character is torn between two love interests who have different personalities, resulting in struggle and a difficult decision.<\/p>\n

The problem is that readers<\/strong> can often predict the outcome of the love triangle from the beginning.<\/p>\n

3. The Manic Pixie Dream Girl
\n<\/b><\/h2>\n

The Manic Pixie Dream Girl is a female character who is eccentric and free-spirited. She serves as a catalyst for the male protagonist’s personal growth.<\/p>\n

Think <\/strong>Garden State<\/strong>, 500 Days of Summer<\/i>, Silver Linings Playbook, <\/i>and many of John Green\u2019s novels.<\/p>\n

While this trope may seem charming and quirky at first, it\u2019s also become overused, unrealistic, and problematic.<\/p>\n

The Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope reduces female characters to mere plot devices rather than fully fleshed out individuals with their own goals and motivations.<\/p>\n

Also, these \u201cgirls\u201d<\/strong> (never women) usually struggle with their mental and\/or physical health, but that\u2019s not anything that\u2019s dealt with in the story in a meaningful way.<\/p>\n

4. The Damsel in Distress<\/b><\/h2>\n

A damsel in distress is\u00a0 a female character who must be rescued by a male hero.<\/p>\n

Think any classic fairy tale<\/strong>, many of Colleen Hoover novels, and the Outlander<\/i> series.<\/p>\n

This trope isn\u2019t used very often anymore.<\/p>\n

Even Disney tries hard to give their female characters agency.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s so they won\u2019t send a harmful message to young readers, particularly young girls, that they are incapable of being strong and independent.<\/p>\n

Furthermore<\/strong>, this trope also reinforces gender stereotypes, with the male hero as the brave savior, while the female is reduced to a passive and helpless victim.<\/p>\n

It also limits the potential for capable female characters, as they are often reduced to one-dimensional roles in the story.<\/p>\n

5. The Bad Boy
\n<\/b><\/h2>\n

The bad boy is brooding, rebellious, and irresistible to women.<\/p>\n

Think <\/strong>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/strong>,<\/i> Gossip Girl <\/i>and Wuthering Heights<\/i>.<\/p>\n

But the bad boy trope romanticizes toxic and unhealthy relationships. He\u2019s dangerous and mysterious; she wants to save or fix him.<\/p>\n

This not only perpetuates the idea that women can change men, but it also normalizes abusive behavior.<\/p>\n

Thinking that love can fix someone’s flaws<\/strong>, or that a person’s bad behavior is excusable if they are attractive and charming, is not okay.<\/p>\n

Just remember, that while tropes are useful tools for writers, when overused, they detract from the story\u2019s impact.<\/p>\n

Readers want us to keep our stories fresh, original, and meaningful.<\/p>\n

Breaking away from these tropes<\/strong> is a first step toward doing just that.<\/p>\n
