At the party, in a corner<\/strong>, nursing a seltzer instead of the host\u2019s signature holiday cocktail that appears to be the precursor to a pounding headache and the sudden onset of type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n

Deep breath. Time to make an effort. Turn to the person on my right. \u201cHi!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHello,\u201d she replies with a smile. \u201cGreat party.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, great party.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now is the time.<\/strong> She\u2019s going to ask the awkward question. She doesn\u2019t know that it\u2019s awkward. It\u2019s just what everyone asks.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, what do you do?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ugh. How to answer?<\/p>\n

A bunch of writer advice says to say, \u201cI\u2019m a writer\u201d and claim the title even if you haven\u2019t published anything.<\/p>\n

You are a writer just because you write!<\/strong> That is enough. And, frankly, even if you have published a book or articles or anything, the next question is usually, \u201cAnything I\u2019ve heard of?\u201d like you have psychic powers and can know. \u201cWhy yes! You read my article about the Apple Harvest Festival in the local paper!\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, imposter syndrome blooms throughout your body and pushes you to say, \u201cI\u2019m an administrative assistant,\u201d or whatever your current job is.<\/p>\n

And then you ask them what they do and end up talking about tax accounting for the rest of the evening.<\/p>\n

Some party, am I right?!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Embrace your inner Nancy Reagan and \u201cJust say NO\u201d to these awful conversations! You write because you love it, and isn\u2019t that a more interesting conversation anyway?<\/p>\n

Instead of asking \u201cwhat do you do?\u201d what would happen if you asked \u201cwhat do you LOVE to do?\u201d<\/p>\n

I guarantee the conversation is going to be more interesting!<\/p>\n

Because what does George<\/strong>, the tax accountant, love to do? Play Dungeons & Dragons? Water ski? Ghost hunt?<\/p>\n

All kinds of lovely juicy interesting things simmer below the surface of his pocket protector.<\/p>\n

Plus, doesn\u2019t this make for the best kind of character research?!<\/p>\n

Now, if you can\u2019t get your question in first,<\/strong> there\u2019s an easy way to shift the conversation. Try this response:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do I do? Oh, I write and no, you haven\u2019t ready anything I\u2019ve written because I don\u2019t show it to people. But I\u2019m still a writer. Oh, you want to know what I do for a living? That\u2019s soooo boring. Tell me about what you love to do!\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s allowable.
\nThat\u2019s preferable.
\nThat\u2019s lovely.<\/p>\n

What if we all celebrated what we loved to do, instead of a job that we may or may not like? Would that be so bad?<\/p>\n

Practice now,<\/strong> just in your mind. What do you do?<\/p>\n

I write novels about space cowboys who herd alien cactus.<\/p>\n

I write hard-boiled detective stories that take place in small towns.<\/p>\n

I write books about a green witch who gardens houseplants and helps lovers find each other.<\/p>\n

Such interesting conversations that could show up in this world<\/strong>. As opposed to yet another conversation about the office that deteriorates into gossip about workmates and leaves you leaving the party feeling like you\u2019ve just worked another eight hours.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s give it a try\u2026<\/p>\n

What do you love to do?<\/p>\n
