What do country musicians and fiction writers have in common?<\/strong> Turns out, more than I thought. Recently, I was in Nashville, so I visited The Country Music Hall of Fame. I wasn\u2019t sure how much I\u2019d enjoy it. I didn\u2019t consider myself a country music fan.<\/p>\n

That said, I\u2019ve always loved Dolly Parton. Who doesn\u2019t? I admire her storytelling abilities so much. Plus, her literacy program, Imagination Library<\/a>, she sends free books to millions of children worldwide.<\/p>\n

On her website, she states:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was growing up in the hills of East Tennessee, I knew my dreams would come true. I know there are children in your community with their own dreams. They dream of becoming a doctor or an inventor or a minister. Who knows, maybe there is a little girl whose dream is to be a writer and singer.<\/i><\/p>\n

The seeds of these dreams are often found in books and the seeds you help plant in your community can grow across the world.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

I love that quote. I especially love that she subtly references herself as a singer AND a writer.<\/p>\n

But be honest, when you think about Dolly Parton, is writer<\/i> the first word that pops into your mind? No? Me neither.<\/p>\n

And yet, she\u2019s both brilliant and incredibly prolific.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

She\u2019s written hundreds of songs, both for herself and for other artists.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s easy not to notice how smart her lyrics are, because she\u2019s so charming and folksy. But when I really think about her story-telling abilities and her knack for metaphors, I get some serious writer\u2019s envy.<\/p>\n

Notice her use of active verbs and metaphor in the opening lines <\/strong>of \u201c9 to 5\u201d, as well as how she effortlessly establishes the exposition:<\/p>\n

Tumble outta bed<\/i>
\n<\/i>And stumble to the kitchen,<\/i>
\n<\/i>Pour myself a cup of ambition!<\/i>
\n<\/i>And yawn and stretch and try to come to life,<\/i>
\n<\/i>jump in the shower<\/i>
\n<\/i>And the blood starts pumpin,<\/i>
\n<\/i>Out on the streets<\/i>
\n<\/i>The traffic starts jumpin,<\/i>
\n<\/i>With folks like me on the job from 9 to 5<\/i><\/p>\n

There\u2019s also this song, the lesser known \u201cDagger Through the Heart.\u201d I love the imagery, the way she uses hyperbole, and how she doesn\u2019t use mixed metaphors.<\/p>\n

(The used box of crayons simile combined with \u201cyou\u2019ve made hurtin\u2019 me such an art\u201d is just so spot-on.)<\/p>\n

Oh, you\u2019re out there tonight with another<\/i>
\n<\/i>And my pain is so dreadfully sharp.<\/i>
\n<\/i>I picture you with her and shudder,<\/i>
\n<\/i>It\u2019s like a dagger through the heart<\/i><\/p>\n

Do you think that my feelings don\u2019t matter,<\/i>
\n<\/i>Or your cheatin\u2019 or hurtful remarks<\/i>
\n<\/i>When you leave me all broken and shattered<\/i>
\n<\/i>It\u2019s like a dagger through the heart<\/i><\/p>\n

Oh, I know I\u2019m a fool to keep stayin\u2019<\/i>
\n<\/i>When you\u2019ve made hurtin\u2019 me such an art,<\/i>
\n<\/i>Tossed around like a used box of crayons,<\/i>
\n<\/i>It\u2019s like a dagger through the heart<\/i><\/p>\n

And what about her arguably most popular song, \u201cHere You Come Again\u201d?<\/p>\n

The storytelling is so tight<\/strong>, and so is the characterization, not to mention effortlessly effective use of 2nd person POV.<\/p>\n

I feel like I know everything I need to know about this guy, and about her, and about their relationship.<\/p>\n

Dolly communicates so much through use of imagery and details (his body, his smile, his mannerisms, etc.) and also through tone (The word choice, which paints a rather bleak picture, contrasts with the actual tone of the music, which is upbeat and chipper.)<\/p>\n

She tells a complete story of a relationship<\/strong>, which is something many novelists struggle to do.<\/p>\n

Here you come again<\/i>
\n<\/i>Just when I\u2019m about to make it work without you<\/i>
\n<\/i>You waltz right in the door<\/i>
\n<\/i>Just like you done before<\/i>
\n<\/i>And wrap my heart round your little finger<\/i>
\n<\/i>Here you come again<\/i>
\n<\/i>Just when I\u2019m about to make it work without you<\/i>
\n<\/i>You look into my eyes<\/i>
\n<\/i>And light those dreamy eyes<\/i>
\n<\/i>And pretty soon I\u2019m wonderin<\/i>
\n<\/i>How I came to doubt you<\/i>
\n<\/i>All you gotta do<\/i>
\n<\/i>Is smile that smile<\/i>
\n<\/i>And there go all my defenses<\/i>
\n<\/i>Just leave it up to you<\/i>
\n<\/i>And in a little while<\/i>
\n<\/i>You\u2019re messin up my mind<\/i>
\n<\/i>An fillin up my senses\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n

But because of her down-home persona, I think Dolly Parton gets overlooked when it comes to her writing ability. The next time I need inspiration for truly good storytelling, I\u2019ll just start combing through her lyrics.<\/p>\n

Then of course, there\u2019s Taylor Swift<\/strong>. I\u2019m an unapologetic Swifty whose favorite writing music is basically any song by her. I think she\u2019s an incredible writer.<\/p>\n

My two favorite things at The Country Music Hall of Fame were the original sheet of notebook paper where Taylor Swift scrawled out the lyrics to her first hit song.<\/p>\n

And this quote by her:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cMy definition of country music is really pretty simple. It\u2019s when someone sings about their life and what they know, and from an authentic place.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s exactly how I feel about fiction writing. Sure, it\u2019s all (or mostly) made up, but it must come from an authentic place or it won\u2019t ring true. Could it be that writing country music and writing fiction have a lot in common?!<\/p>\n

After listening to song clips by many other musicians showcased at The Country Music Hall of Fame, I realized I could learn a lot by listening to their work.<\/p>\n

Anyway, that leads me to \u201cLove and Poetry<\/strong> \u2013 a short story written while listening to Taylor Swift.\u201d<\/p>\n

I included every song title from The Tortured Poet\u2019s Department, and roughly 100 more song titles and\/or lyric references. It was sorta like writing an entire story via Taylor Swift ala magnetic poetry.<\/p>\n

More than anything, it was a writing exercise and a challenge. I did it to learn something and to stretch myself.<\/p>\n
