One of my favourite pastimes is scrolling through Instagram reel<\/strong>s. It\u2019s a fun way to turn off my brain when I\u2019m not in the mood to do anything.<\/p>\n

Should I try to read more and go outside when it\u2019s nice? Yes, that is one of my goals. But Instagram can be a positive place if you know where to look.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t focus on the \u201cdoom scrolling\u201d listening to rants about how the world has gone crazy. I stop on the inspirational videos. The ones sharing confidence and empowerment in the same way that I do.<\/p>\n

Because I saw this in brief passing<\/strong>, I don\u2019t remember who the creator was, but I came upon a reel talking to writers about the word \u201caspiring\u201d. This creator wants to abolish that word completely from a writer\u2019s vocabulary, especially when it precedes the word \u201cwriter\u201d.<\/p>\n

I 100% agree.<\/p>\n

Call yourself a writer — aspiring not required.<\/p>\n

Aspiring means to dream about the type of person you wish to be<\/strong>. And when people call themselves an \u201caspiring writer\u201d they aren\u2019t fully embracing who they are and their accomplishments as a writer.<\/p>\n

And by accomplishments, I don\u2019t mean publications. There is far more to being a writer than being published.<\/p>\n

What is a writer?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Someone who writes. Plain and simple.<\/p>\n

Are you working on your debut novel?<\/strong> You\u2019re a writer.<\/p>\n

Do you have several unfinished projects on your shelf? You\u2019re still a writer.<\/p>\n

Those words didn\u2019t write themselves. You\u2019re not \u201caspiring\u201d anymore once you\u2019ve already started writing.<\/p>\n

During a podcast interview for the Worthy Writers Podcast with Writer and Entrepreneurial Leadership Development Mentor, Elle Turner, we had a wonderful chicken or egg conversation in regard to writers.<\/p>\n

Elle says,<\/strong> \u201cif you\u2019re waiting for your work to be published to call yourself a writer, you still have to write the book.\u201d<\/p>\n

What are you supposed to call yourself in the meantime?<\/p>\n

A pre-writer?<\/p>\n

Like when they call studying doctors pre-med?<\/p>\n

Oh yes<\/strong>, that\u2019s right. I\u2019ve been working to remove a certain word from my vocabulary and forgot we\u2019re talking about aspiring writers here.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the word that people have decided to title themselves in the meantime. Let\u2019s work to change that mentality!<\/p>\n

If aspiring means that your goal is to become a specific person, but you\u2019ve already taken steps to become that person, remove the unnecessary words.<\/p>\n

My editor brain is coming out now<\/strong>. Cut out the filler words! Only keep what is necessary and is filled with purpose.<\/p>\n

You are in the process of writing, so you are in fact a writer.<\/p>\n

Not everyone has the dedication or motivation to even start writing their book.<\/p>\n

Not everyone wants to partake in writing, and becoming a published author has never crossed their minds.<\/p>\n

Calling yourself a writer distinguishes one of your unique traits<\/strong>. It\u2019s one of many beautiful ways you can define yourself.<\/p>\n

What can you say instead of aspiring?
\n<\/b><\/h2>\n

Removing a word from your vocabulary that you\u2019ve used for so long is tricky. Just like any habit you\u2019ve built into your brain\u2019s hardware, it will take some time to correct.<\/p>\n

How can you use the word<\/strong> \u201caspiring\u201d in a way that is more meaningful and doesn\u2019t downplay your current achievements?<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve accomplished the writing part, whether you\u2019ve got drafts upon drafts in fiction, memoir, short stories, or poetry.<\/p>\n

So, what are you actually aspiring to be now? What are your goals within the realm of a writer\u2019s journey?<\/p>\n

If you haven\u2019t published anything yet, you can aspire to be a published writer.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re looking for an agent<\/strong>, you can aspire to be a writer represented by an agency.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re hoping to achieve an award, you\u2019re aspiring to add \u201caward-winning\u201d onto your writer title.<\/p>\n

When you call yourself an aspiring writer, what you actually mean to describe are the goals you want to achieve within your writer life.<\/p>\n

Gain more readers<\/strong>, write more blog posts, be a guest on more podcasts to talk about your writing journey \u2013 there are so many goals you can have, but the one you have already achieved is being a writer. The only way you can accurately say \u201caspiring writer\u201d is if you\u2019ve never written a word in your life.<\/p>\n

You are a Writer.
\n<\/b><\/h2>\n

Own your writer status. Embrace it. Be a writer and create the lifestyle you\u2019ve always dreamed of one step at a time.<\/p>\n

Repeating that writer status every day<\/strong> will boost your confidence and make writing your stories much more enjoyable.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s what creativity is all about, right? Joy. Sharing your voice.<\/p>\n

Expressing yourself in ways that other activities don\u2019t allow. Do yourself a kindness and never forget that you ARE a writer.<\/p>\n

Never forget that you are worthy.<\/strong><\/p>\n
