I\u2019m often jealous of authors who realize early<\/strong> what they want to write and how to brand and market their books and their author platform. That\u2019s not me.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m great at finishing books, but not so great at finding and identifying my readers.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve written over a dozen novels, several novellas, and numerous short stories. Many of them are published; three (soon to be four) of my novels are traditionally published, but not by anyone who will get my paperbacks on bookstores’ shelves.<\/p>\n

Some of my work I\u2019ve unpublished and some hasn\u2019t yet been shown to the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I switch genres, from chick lit to women\u2019s fiction to literary to psychological thrillers to contemporary romance. At one point I had an agent.<\/p>\n

Mostly, I\u2019ve self-published and at times experienced modest success, winning awards and making sales.<\/p>\n

Some highlights include being featured in USA Today<\/em> books, and interviewed on Lori & Julia\u2019s book club, a highly popular Minneapolis\/St. Paul radio show that often hosts best-selling authors.<\/p>\n

Dreaming of Success<\/h2>\n

But none of it has amounted to the success I still dream about. Perhaps \u201cdream\u201d is the wrong word to use here. I do a lot more than dream; I constantly look for new ways to achieve more, and then I work as hard as I can to get there.<\/p>\n

That leads me to last fall<\/strong>, when while putting together a new Amazon ad, I noticed an unfamiliar author who\u2019d achieved best-seller status. Lucy Score.<\/p>\n

Her books didn\u2019t look like my type of read, but I was impressed by how successful she was. Then, the next time I was walking through the book section at Target, I saw several of her titles.<\/p>\n

Good for her, <\/i>I thought to myself, and then I veered off to find a gallon of milk.<\/p>\n

Months later, while researching romance authors, I saw her titles again. I visited her website<\/a> and discovered that most of her titles are self-published!<\/p>\n

Not only that<\/strong>, but her books published by her own company, That\u2019s What She Said<\/i>, are her highest selling novels. The traditionally published ones do okay, but not as well as the self-published ones.<\/p>\n

Lucy Score has it going on.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s one of those authors I mentioned at the top, the type I envy because they figured out early on how to brand and market their writing.<\/p>\n

(That\u2019s not to say her writing isn\u2019t clever and well-done. I began reading one of her novels, and while it wasn\u2019t for me, I thought she had a strong and appealing voice.)<\/p>\n

The Point<\/h2>\n

Okay. You might be asking yourself, what\u2019s the point of this story?<\/i><\/p>\n

Here it is:<\/strong> Lucy Score and the realization that I can enjoy writing something that is also marketable has compelled me back to self-publishing, and to re-release one of my self-published titles.<\/p>\n

I created a new edition, a tighter version now in paperback, with plans to make an audio version as well.<\/p>\n

I published The Next Breath<\/i><\/a> almost ten years ago. It won Honorable Mention for Women\u2019s Fiction in the RONE Awards, which are prestigious because they don\u2019t charge you anything to enter.<\/p>\n

However,<\/strong> going back and re-editing my novel was super cringy. Why did I ever think this book was any good?\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

I asked myself this multiple<\/b> times. I consoled myself with this rationalization: Since writing The Next Breath, <\/i>I\u2019d written five more novels, four of which would be published by someone other than me.<\/p>\n

I completed a master\u2019s degree in creative writing. I\u2019d learned a huge amount about editing and revisions. And by writing and publishing short fiction with online literary journals, I\u2019d gained the ability to use an economy of words for maximum effect.<\/p>\n

Editing The Next Breath<\/i><\/h2>\n

I wound up cutting nearly 20,000 words from The Next Breath.<\/i><\/p>\n

But I also added a prologue and extended some scenes<\/strong>, so it\u2019s still over 80,000.<\/p>\n

Originally, I decided to release the new edition of The Next Breath<\/i> so I could hype something as I wait for the release date of contemporary romance, The Side Project<\/i> (published by The Wild Rose Press hopefully sometime this fall.) I decided to do an audio version, but first I\u2019d need to tighten it.<\/p>\n

Then, I changed its cover so it would look similar to the cover TWRP designed for The Side Project. <\/i>Because, you know it\u2019s all about branding.<\/p>\n

I also decided that in order to seem legit<\/strong>, I ought to release a print version.<\/p>\n

So I spent a hefty sum to have the file formatted as a paperback. Then, I uploaded it onto Amazon, thinking I\u2019d publish the print version solely through them. However, something happened when I had the ARC version of my paperback sent to me.<\/p>\n

I fell in love.<\/p>\n

Everything was just how I wanted it. It looked great, and flipping through the book\u2019s pages, I\u2019m confident that this time, the writing is good. I haven\u2019t deluded myself into believing that Target or B&N will magically stock my book on its shelves.<\/p>\n

However<\/strong>, there are some local independent bookstores in the Twin Cities who might, especially one that specializes in romance.<\/p>\n

I went on their website, and they said all books they carry must be distributed by Ingram.<\/p>\n

So, yesterday I created an account, uploaded my files, and now I\u2019m waiting for them to send me the digital proof.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, I\u2019m finding reviewers, contacting influencers, entering contests, posting on social media, setting up Amazon ads, and trying to create hype.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the same stuff I\u2019ve done in the last two years for two of my traditionally published titles.<\/strong> However, now, 100% of the potential royalties will go to me.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s too soon to say if self-publishing will make it more difficult to succeed.<\/p>\n

Or, perhaps having all this control will make it easier.<\/p>\n

My ultimate goal with this project is to make enough sales and get enough reviews that I can attract one of my favorite audiobook narrators (one with a large following) to sign on for the recording.<\/p>\n

But side-goals include selling paperback copies in local independent bookstores<\/strong>, and gaining positive reviews and accolades.<\/p>\n
