Writing is a form of teaching.<\/span><\/strong> I’m a teacher who loves to write. I’m a writer who loves to teach. Which am I? Both. Quantum entanglement, my husband, the high school physics teacher, would say.<\/h2>\n

To harness my teacher inside, I quit my day job two plus years ago and launch Barany Consulting to coach, consult and teach writers how to unleash the creative communicator within. To feed my teacher within, give back to the community, and put some extra cash on the table, I’ll be tutoring elementary school kids after school, starting next week. To expand the teacher, I teach online and in the “real world”.<\/p>\n

In January, I’ll be a guest presenter and panelist at the Gilroy Library, talking about Mythic Structure for Writers: Empower Your Heroic, Fantasy and Adventure Fiction<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Christopher Vogler, \u201call stories consist of a few common structural elements found universally in myths, fairy tales, dreams, and movies.\u201d Authors can adopt these thematic elements to empower their plot structure and develop more universally compelling characters.<\/p>\n

Join us as we read and discuss The Writer\u2019s Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers<\/em><\/strong><\/span>, 3rd ed.<\/span><\/strong><\/em>, by Christopher Vogler. Each of the three GWP programs will feature comments on Vogler\u2019s elemental themes and story structure patterns by published authors. The programs will include clips illustrating Vogler\u2019s thematic elements in contemporary film and animation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What is young adult fantasy fiction and why would you want to write it? In this course, instructor Beth Barany will cover the answer to these questions and more. Learn the fundamentals of a good fantasy and science fiction story for the young adult market from someone who is actively researching and pitching in this area. During the class, you will learn about world building, what agents and editors say they\u2019re looking for, and what makes for a compelling main character. Like any good book, this kind of story needs a strong premise, so Beth will encourage students to draft and refine their stories\u2019 premise throughout the 4-week course.<\/p>\n
