\"Mastering<\/a>Let\u2019s welcome back Laurel Osterkamp<\/a> as she shares with us \u201cMastering Banter for Dynamic Character Relationships.\u201d Enjoy!<\/p>\n

***<\/p>\n

You\u2019re reading a really excellent novel<\/strong>, and two of the main characters — whether they\u2019re friends, rivals, or lovers (or perhaps all three)–have this amazing dynamic. It\u2019s like they connect on a whole different level; it\u2019s almost as if they speak their own private language.<\/p>\n

That, my friend, is an example of effective banter, which is essential for creating a compelling and dynamic relationship between your main characters. Banter can add depth, humor, and realism to character interactions.<\/p>\n

Done well, banter reveals the dynamics of a relationship<\/strong>, showcases the personalities of the characters, and even foreshadows future events. But most of all, effective banter distinguishes the relationship or connection between your two main characters as special and\/or one of a kind.<\/p>\n

But it can be hard, making your characters brilliant, clever, and glib. Whenever I want to add some mind-blowing banter, I immediately become blocked. (Try saying that three times fast.)<\/p>\n

Fear not:<\/strong> there are tools you can use to make writing banter a little bit easier.<\/p>\n

1. Know Your Characters<\/b><\/h2>\n

Before you can create compelling banter between your characters, you need to have a deep understanding of their personalities, backgrounds, and motivations. Take the time to flesh out your characters’ traits and quirks, their history with one another, and the dynamics of their relationship.<\/p>\n

In Good Girl\u2019s Guide to Murder<\/i> by Holly Jackson<\/strong>, the banter between Pip and Ravi reveals the fundamental personality traits and conflicts of both characters. Like this scene, which comes early in the novel:<\/p>\n

Pip tried her best not to look hurt. \u201cI\u2019m not messing, I promise. I\u2019m serious.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, you seem like the serious type.\u201d The back of his head must have been exceptionally itchy. Or maybe Ravi Singh\u2019s itchy head was the equivalent of Pip\u2019s overexplaining.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m irrationally serious,\u201d Pip smiled, holding the Tupperware out to him. \u201cAnd I made muffins.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cLike bribery muffins?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what the recipe said, yeah.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

Ravi\u2019s mouth twitched; not quite a smile. Pip only then appreciated how hard his life must be in this town\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n

2. Use Dialogue Tags and Actions
\n<\/b><\/h2>\n

Dialogue tags and actions are powerful tools that can help elevate your banter. Instead of relying solely on dialogue, use descriptive tags and actions to add depth and context to your characters’ conversation.<\/p>\n

This will not only make the banter more engaging but also paint a vivid picture of the characters’ emotions and intentions.<\/p>\n

For example,<\/strong> in Lesley Nneka Arimah\u2019s short story \u201cGlory,\u201d banter is sandwiched between dialogue tags and actions that adds to its impact.<\/p>\n

\u201cSorry, I don\u2019t really know anyone either. You should try talking to someone with real friends.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

He laughed, thinking she was joking, and his misunderstanding loosened her tongue. It was nice to talk to someone with no expectations of her.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cSo, why are you slumming it here with the rest of us?\u00a0 Shouldn\u2019t you be interning somewhere fabulous?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

3. Add Conflict<\/b><\/h2>\n

Conflict is always compelling and can add tension to the scene. This can also be an effective tool for character development, as it can reveal their flaws, fears, and desires.<\/p>\n

In Happy Place<\/i> by Emily Henry<\/strong>, Harriet and Wyn\u2019s first meeting is full of verbal missteps and misunderstandings, which provides just the right amount of conflict. We instantly know that these two characters will challenge each other, but in a good way.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour hair\u2019s almost black. In the moonlight, it looks blue.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cBlue?\u201d I say. \u201cYou think my hair is<\/i> blue?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot like, Smurf blue,\u201d he says. \u201cBlue black. You can\u2019t tell in pictures. You look different.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s true,\u201d I say. \u201cIn real life, I\u2019m three-dimensional.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n

4. Use Pop Culture References
\n<\/b><\/h2>\n

Pop culture references can add a layer of realism to your characters and make them more relatable.<\/p>\n

They can also add humor and serve as a way for characters to bond and connect with each other.<\/p>\n

However,<\/strong> it is important to use references that are relevant to your characters and their interests, and not just for the sake of it.<\/p>\n

In Check & Mate <\/i>by Ali Hazlewood, Mallory and Nolan are both chess superstars, so their banter is often filled with pop culture references relevant to their world.<\/p>\n

\u201cFine.\u201d I sit across from him, as distant as possible. This is what I get for refusing pizza. \u201cBut I\u2019m not going to play, so\u2013\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cChess.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cYou said you wouldn\u2019t play chess. You didn\u2019t mention anything else, so\u2026\u201d He turns the flier to me. He has drawn a three-by-three grid, put an X through a space, and\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n

I laugh. \u201cTic-tac-toe? <\/i>Really?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cUnless you have Uno handy? Checkers? Operation?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is worse than Candy Crush.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

5. Make it Relevant to the Plot<\/b><\/h2>\n

Banter should not only serve as a way to showcase the characters’ personalities and relationships but also advance the plot.<\/p>\n

It should reveal something about the characters, their motivations, and the story.<\/p>\n

Use banter to foreshadow future events or add clues and hints that will be important later in the story.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Daphne Du Maurier\u2019s classic My Cousin Rachel, <\/i>Phillip and Rachel are constantly testing each other while bantering.<\/p>\n

Occasionally, they reveal unexpected truths which hints at events to come.<\/p>\n

T<\/i>here was a long silence. Then, she said, \u201cOnly these two?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cOnly those two,\u201d I answered.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cNothing after Easter, or Whitsun, did you say, until these came?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cNo, nothing\u2026\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cHow you must have hated me,\u201d she said slowly.<\/i><\/p>\n

I looked up, startled\u2026 \u201cYes,\u201d I said.<\/i><\/p>\n

Crafting compelling and clever banter is a skill that takes time and practice to master.<\/p>\n

By knowing your characters,<\/strong> using dialogue tags and actions, incorporating humor and conflict, and making it relevant to the plot, you can create banter that captures the essence of your characters and adds depth and richness to your story.<\/p>\n

As you write, remember to let your characters’ personalities shine through, and don’t be afraid to let them surprise you with their banter.<\/p>\n

After all, they are the ones who will ultimately bring your story to life.<\/strong><\/p>\n
