I\u2019ll use some of her tips for my next novel.<\/p>\n<p>^*^<\/p>\n<p><em>Creating Characters That Come Alive, Part 2 <\/em><a title=\"Indie Author Feature: Creating Characters That Come Alive by LJ DeLeon\" href=\"https:\/\/writersfunzone.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/11\/indie-author-feature-creating-characters-that-come-alive\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8212; Part 1 is here.<br \/>\n<\/a>By <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ljdeleon.com\/\">LJ DeLeon<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In my last blog, I covered examples of in a character\u2019s life as he grows up that make him who he is.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Family<\/li>\n<li>Religion<\/li>\n<li>Position in society or the family<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Today I\u2019d like to talk about not only his character but how the world he grew up in helps him survive the world he awakens in. This encompasses last week\u2019s blog but also the actual world s\/he grew up in. For this, I\u2019m using my hero, Max Turner, from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ultimate-Game-Turner-Chronicles-ebook\/dp\/B004UW2NIG\/\">The Ultimate Game<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Max was born in 1845. His father\u2019s a professional gambler. When caught cheating, his dad is gunned down. In that moment, six-year-old Max\u2019s life changes direction. His mother becomes a prostitute, he\u2019s raised in a whorehouse, and he\u2019s filled with guilt that he couldn\u2019t save either of his parents, especially his adored mother.<\/p>\n<p>So, what does Max do?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He shoves his feelings down deep, buries them, and doesn\u2019t acknowledge them.<\/li>\n<li>He becomes a cheat, conman, and professional gambler, but one who is so smooth, he isn\u2019t caught. Think Maverick with a Spock mindset.<\/li>\n<li>He doesn\u2019t let women touch his heart. He calls them all, love. It\u2019s bad form to forget a woman\u2019s name when making love to her.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ultimate-Game-Turner-Chronicles-ebook\/dp\/B004UW2NIG\/\">The Ultimate Game<\/a><\/strong> doesn\u2019t take place in the past. It\u2019s a futuristic cyberpunk romance. In 1875, Max and two women are trapped in a cave. In 2484, he awakens in a cryo chamber. His fianc\u00e9e is dead; her maid is alive. The world is tightly controlled by ten families\/corporations. Independent spirits are discouraged and\/or limited. The dead fianc\u00e9e\u2019s a direct descendant of the Riley Family, who wants Max dead.<\/p>\n<p>Could a conman and gambler survive in this new world? Could he win and in so doing bring down the Riley Family? Could he become the head of a Family? What skills does he have that would have been lost in the cyber age? It\u2019s a time when everyone except the leaders of the Families are implanted with GPS type chips that have explosives in them. How does he keep himself and Maddie from being chipped?<\/p>\n<p>These questions center around the character of Max, Maddy, and the world the find themselves in. To write this story, it was critical to view the world itself as a character for it shaped the people in it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ultimate-Game-Turner-Chronicles-ebook\/dp\/B004UW2NIG\/\">The Ultimate Game<\/a><\/strong> uses these questions and Max\u2019s past as the springboard for the story. Of course, Maddie isn\u2019t all she seems either. Maid? I think not, try a thief who\u2019s furious at Max for stealing or is it winning, the Riley fortune in a poker game before she cleaned out their safe.<\/p>\n<p>So, what is Maddie\u2019s character?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>She\u2019s the daughter of poor Irish Immigrants.<\/li>\n<li>She worked from a young age.<\/li>\n<li>She was passed off as a boy and worked in a whorehouse, but she doesn\u2019t like prostitutes.<\/li>\n<li>She\u2019s a con woman and thief.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Before word one is written, I have my external and internal conflict. It\u2019s all about character, the gut deep kind that determines our actions. These two people can join forces and survive or stay at odds and die.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s see how I handled it when Max finally discovers the truth.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Pulling back, he brushed auburn strands of spun golden fire off her face and gazed into eyes filled with calculation. Ah, not such an innocent. \u201cWhat are you?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cA maid?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMaddie,\u201d he drawled, grinning at the fleeting look of shock replaced by cunning. \u201cWe both know you\u2019re so much more. Like recognizes like.\u201d Bending down, he pressed a kiss to her forehead and tucked the blanket around her. \u201cTrust me, Maddie. Trust me.
