***<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve probably heard it before;<\/strong> when crafting characters, your first step is to determine each character’s wants and needs. Something so fundamental should be easy, right?<\/p>\n

Not always.<\/p>\n

What we want and what we need is often determined by our personalities and how we prioritize.<\/p>\n

For example,<\/strong> in The Hunger Games, <\/i>both Peeta and Katniss are thrust into the same arena where they are forced to fight to the death. You\u2019d think they would each want and need the same things, like self-preservation and survival.<\/p>\n

But no. Katnis, who is naturally strong-willed and competitive, wants to protect her sister and needs to survive so she can make it home to her. Peeta, who is sensitive and in touch with his emotions, wants to protect Katniss and needs to stay true to himself.<\/p>\n

Determining the core of your characters\u2019 personalities first can help determine their wants and needs.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve created a character whose personality is similar to your own<\/strong>, it\u2019s fairly simple to figure out what motivates them.<\/p>\n

But what about characters who are different from you?<\/p>\n

In Steps the Enneagram<\/h2>\n

That\u2019s where The Enneagram can help.<\/p>\n

The Enneagram,<\/strong> a system of personality types, is a great tool for figuring out characters that are both realistic and believable.<\/p>\n

The nine personality types each have their own distinct set of motivations, needs, and fears, represented by a nine-pointed star and associated with a particular number.<\/p>\n

The Types of Enneagram<\/h2>\n

The nine Enneagrams are:<\/p>\n

Type 1 \u2013 The Reformer:<\/b> A perfectionist who strives for excellence in all their endeavors. Analytical, self-critical, and moralistic.<\/p>\n

Example: Atticus Finch from Harper Lee\u2019s To Kill a Mockingbird<\/i> — Atticus is a moral paragon who never wavers from his principles and is always striving to do the right thing.<\/p>\n

Type 2 \u2013 The Helper:<\/b> A generous and loving soul who puts other people\u2019s needs before their own. Warm, affirming, and compassionate.<\/p>\n

Example: Hagrid. <\/i>Though his actions are often misguided, Hagrid always operates out of kindness. His main desire is to help those whom he cares about.<\/p>\n

Type 3<\/b> \u2013 The Achiever<\/b>: Ambitious and driven, these characters always strive for success and recognition. Image-conscious, goal-oriented, and competitive.<\/p>\n

Example: Tony Stark from Marvel\u2019s Iron Man is a self-made billionaire who pushes himself to the limit in pursuit of success.<\/p>\n

Type 4 \u2013 The Individualist<\/b>: A sensitive and introspective type who values authenticity and depth. Artistic, creative, and prone to moodiness.<\/p>\n

Example: Peeta Melark from Suzanne Collins\u2019 The Hunger Games. <\/i>Peeta appreciates beauty and truth, and his main concern is staying true to himself, rather than letting the Capitol turn him into a ruthless killer.<\/p>\n

Type 5 \u2013 The Investigator<\/b>: A cerebral and independent type who is always looking for new ideas and ways of understanding the world. Analytical, curious, and often reserved.<\/p>\n

Example: Sherlock Holmes from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle\u2019s The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes<\/i>. Holmes uses his sharp intellect to solve seemingly impossible mysteries.<\/p>\n

Type 6 \u2013 The Loyalist<\/b>: A responsible and diligent type who values security and stability. Loyal, practical, and sometimes anxious.<\/p>\n

Example: Marilla Cuthbert from Lucy Maud Montgomery\u2019s Anne of Green Gables. <\/i>It takes Marilla a while to warm up, but once she\u2019s on your side, she will never waver.<\/p>\n

Type 7 \u2013 The Enthusiast<\/b>: An upbeat and optimistic type who is always looking for new experiences and ways to have fun.<\/p>\n

Example: Elle Woods from Legally Blonde<\/i>. Elle is a fun-loving law student who never stops believing in herself, even when the odds are stacked against her.<\/p>\n

Type 8 \u2013 The Challenger:<\/b> A powerful and assertive type who takes charge and leads the way. Decisive, bold, and often quite confrontational.<\/p>\n

Example: Katniss Everdeen from Suzanne Collins\u2019 The Hunger Games<\/i>. Katniss is a brave and determined hunter who is willing to lay down her life for her family and friends.<\/p>\n

Type 9 \u2013 The Peacemaker<\/b>: A gentle and harmonious type who values balance and understanding. Self-effacing, tolerant, and easy-going.<\/p>\n

Example: Bilbo Baggins from J.R.R. Tolkien\u2019s The Hobbit<\/i>. Bilbo is a mellow hobbit who loves peace and quiet.<\/p>\n

How to Use the Enneagram<\/h2>\n

If you think you want to use the Enneagram to develop your characters, start by understanding the basic characteristics of each type.<\/p>\n

Then you can explore the motivations<\/strong>, needs, and fears of specific characters to make them both authentic and believable.<\/p>\n

For example, say your protagonist is an Achiever (3).<\/p>\n

Achievers are driven by the need for recognition and success, so perhaps they\u2019re determined to become a world-renowned scientist or to make a fortune in the stock market.<\/p>\n

The Achiever’s fear of failure can be driven by a desire to prove themselves and not be dismissed as a \u201cnobody.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve created characters with realistic and believable motivations<\/strong>, use the Enneagram to create authentic interactions between them.<\/p>\n

I suggest representing a variety of personality types in your cast of characters to create misunderstandings and miscommunications, inevitably leading to conflict.<\/p>\n

Figure out how their differing personalities affect their interactions.<\/p>\n

For example<\/strong>, a Loyalist (6) might be naturally drawn to a Helper (2), while an Investigator (5) might be more likely to clash with an Achiever (3).<\/p>\n

The Achiever might be driven by their ambition and need for recognition, while the Investigator might be suspicious of the Achiever\u2019s motivations and challenge their every move.<\/p>\n

A relationship like that, especially if it\u2019s romantic, establishes a push\/pull dynamic, giving your characters a compelling reason to interact.<\/p>\n

Using the Enneagram for Character Arcs<\/h2>\n

You can also use The Enneagram to develop character arcs.<\/p>\n

By understanding each character\u2019s motivations, needs, and fears, you can let them change and grow throughout the story.<\/p>\n

For instance,<\/strong> your Achiever might start off as arrogant and ambitious, but over the course of the story, become humbled and learn the importance of helping others.<\/p>\n

The Enneagram is a powerful tool if you\u2019re looking to craft deep, authentic characters.<\/p>\n

By using this system<\/strong>, you can gain insight into the motivations, strengths, and weaknesses of your characters, ultimately making them more emotionally resonant and complex.<\/p>\n
