It&#8217;s filled with delicious, feel good snacks. Last week it was a garbage bag full of rotting take out containers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Even if the rest of the world can&#8217;t see it<\/strong>, we live in a constantly shifting emotional landscape inside our heads.<\/p>\n<p>Most writers are afraid of putting too much emotion on the page, when in reality most writers aren\u2019t putting nearly enough emotion on the page.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Writers tend to be stingy.<\/strong> As if they\u2019re trying to cram a character&#8217;s emotional luggage into the nearest closet, under the bed, or anywhere no one will see it.<\/p>\n<p>Readers \u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Want you to open up all that baggage.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Want to root around in your novel to see what you got in there.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Love messy, complicated, uncomfortable, emotions.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Crave all those emotions you\u2019re trying to tiptoe around.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t be afraid to give it to them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But. . .<br \/>\n<i>(You probably knew that was coming, didn\u2019t you?)<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>You can\u2019t make readers feel something they don\u2019t already feel.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If you can\u2019t get your readers&#8217; emotions engaged, they\u2019re not going to connect with what you\u2019re writing, and they\u2019re going to go do something else &#8212; like fold laundry or mow the lawn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It would be so much easier if we could just magicalize our readers into feeling all the feels,<\/strong> but we can\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>How do we hijack their emotions instead so they feel what we want them to feel?<\/p>\n<h2><b>Know what your reader is looking for.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b><\/b>Your task isn\u2019t to force them to feel what they don\u2019t feel, but to get them to feel more of what they\u2019re already feeling or looking for.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Readers want to connect<\/strong> &#8212; they want to FEEL. They\u2019re ready for what you\u2019re offering before they\u2019ve even read a word of your novel. This is great news.<\/p>\n<p>When a reader shops for a book, whether they know it or not, they\u2019re shopping for an emotion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emotions are triggered by:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Reviews<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Title<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Cover art<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Book jacket<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Your readers also have emotional expectations based on the GENRE they\u2019re shopping for.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Here are a few genres and emotions connected with them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Romance: <\/b>Love. Desire. Jealousy. Obsession. Intimacy. Grief. Guilt.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Action \/ Thriller: <\/b>Excitement. Life on the line. Big stakes. Risk. Reward.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Crime \/ Mystery: <\/b>Curiosity. Intrigue. Justice. Vengeance. Anger.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Horror: <\/b>Fear. Terror. Survival.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>SciFi \/ Fantasy:<\/b> Wonder. Awe. Adventure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a writer, as soon as you know what genre you\u2019re writing in, you know the foundational emotions of your story. You know what your readers are looking for.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Writing a Jack Reacher inspired thriller?<\/strong> Then you need to make sure you\u2019re including situations that evoke excitement, risk, reward, and adrenaline.
