While I don&#8217;t have a Baba Yaga-like character in my YA fantasy novel,<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/Henrietta-DragonSlayer\" target=\"_blank\">Henrietta The Dragon Slayer<\/a><\/em>, I do have an old mysterious and little bit scary witch. You&#8217;ll just have to read it if you&#8217;re curious for more!<\/p>\n<p>Turns out <a title=\"Baba Yaga at Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baba_Yaga\" target=\"_blank\">Baba Yaga<\/a> is more popular in the arts than I realized, having been featured in movies, games, comic books, novels and music.<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s an old witch in Slavic and Russian folk tales. I associate her with these motifs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fire<\/li>\n<li>A house that runs on chicken legs<\/li>\n<li>She eats maidens<\/li>\n<li>A rites of passage<\/li>\n<li>Young adulthood<\/li>\n<li>Scary<\/li>\n<li>Thrill<\/li>\n<li>Adventure<\/li>\n<li>Ferocious<\/li>\n<li>Cackling<\/li>\n<li>The smell of rotten eggs and bean soup<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For me: She mandates that we grow up, that we face our fears and see them for what they are: manifestations of the unknown.<\/p>\n<p>She is the archetype of the wild woman crone. <em>She we will become if we&#8217;re lucky enough to survive our fears and move mountains with our magic.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What was Baba Yaga like when she was 16 years old?
