Do you collect oracle cards?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tantalizing packs of cards that have appeared like, ahem, magic, on the counter of every bookstore in town?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Oracle Cards?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Card collections run from The Wild Goddess Oracle to the classic Rider-Waite Tarot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some card collections are self-explanatory and some need background and study to suss out their meaning and message.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fun Fact:<\/strong> Tarot cards are not the direct precursors to our playing cards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While the clubs, coins, rods, and swords in the tarot deck have some correspondence to hearts, clubs, spades and diamonds, there is not a direct correlation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But all oracle and tarot decks hold promise and diversion, and if nothing else, art.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Oracle often follows a theme, such as Fairies, Cultural systems, Magic, Animals, Gods\/Goddess or the process of self-improvement. The Oracle is somewhat more liberal and offers more creative sources for artisans that create decks because it is not limited to such a complex structure like Tarot cards.\u201d <\/span>TarotX <\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

It\u2019s in the Cards\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Tarot cards have a reputation of revealing the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, the phrase,<\/strong> <\/span>it\u2019s in the cards<\/span><\/i> connotes future foretelling. But this has never been the case, historically card readings were primarily a way to reveal our path or even enlighten and help us understand what we are currently feeling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Spreading out a lovely attractive deck of cards is one physical way to look at our own impulses and our own truth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Oracle Author\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The cards are essentially a creative way to reveal our unconscious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Like casting horoscopes for your fictional characters<\/strong>, oracle and\/or tarot readings can help illuminate and add depth to your characters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tarot cards can also help answer questions about narrative and show a different direction for your plot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

T.S. Eliot thematically links <\/strong>The Waste Land <\/span><\/i>to <\/span>The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock<\/span><\/i><\/a>, using Tarot cards.<\/span><\/p>\n

. . . your card, the drowned Phoenician Sailor,<\/span><\/p>\n

(Those are pearls that were his eyes. Look!)<\/span><\/p>\n

Here is Belladonna, the Lady of the Rocks,<\/span><\/p>\n

The lady of situations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here is the man with three staves, and here the Wheel,<\/span><\/p>\n

And here is the one-eyed merchant, and this card,<\/span><\/p>\n

Which is blank, is something he carries on his back,<\/span><\/p>\n

How Can Oracle\/Tarot Cards Help With Our Writing?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Since Tarot cards are often used as psychological therapy, showing why people act like they do, or how they perceive a problem, an author can do the same and gain insight to a character\u2019s motivation and responses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cult film director Alejandro Jodorowsky, commented that \u201cThe tarot, will teach you how to create a soul.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Create a reading for your character.<\/strong> Ask the cards about the next step, motivation, emotional response.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cards can help you move your character through the next adventure in an interesting way with (perhaps) more interesting outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Does she stay or should she go? Pick a card.<\/span><\/p>\n

What was her past?<\/strong> What were her obstacles? Place three cards down to represent the past\/present\/future<\/span><\/p>\n

Not sure about your own next project?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ask the cards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Again, you will not get a definite answer<\/strong>, but you will get new ideas or a re-enforcement and expression of what you were thinking all along.<\/span><\/p>\n
