You have a great idea for a piece of fiction<\/strong>. You sit down at your computer, and begin to write.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But what about THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISION you will make about your story or novel?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That is, which point of view will you choose?<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are more options than you might think. I\u2019ve listed them here in order of how often I believe they are used.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Third Person Limited<\/h2>\n

With third-person limited, we get a lot of insight into a specific character\u2019s thoughts and motivations, yet the story is still told by an unseen narrator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Third person-limited gives a writer flexibility yet still allows for intimacy.<\/span><\/p>\n

First Person \u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

My personal favorite.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, for a long time, I hated to write in any POV other than first person.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I like speaking directly to my reader<\/strong>, through the voice of my protagonist. It just feels so easy and comfortable, and I can \u201cget to know\u201d my main character in a way that writing in any other point of view won\u2019t allow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lately I\u2019ve learned to break out of my first-person rut.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Third Person Omniscient<\/h2>\n

Personally, I would never use an all-knowing narrator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For me, it\u2019s too difficult to focus. But some authors<\/strong>, like Jane Austen, achieve it beautifully.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You might be thinking, <\/span>Wait. Isn\u2019t <\/span><\/i>Pride and Prejudice <\/span>written in third-person-limited?\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Actually, no.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While a lot of what we see and hear is filtered through Lizzie<\/strong>, not all of it is. Consider the first line:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.\u201d
\n<\/span>Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

While being a love story, is more importantly a commentary on society. Thus, the narration must have a universal tone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Second Person<\/h2>\n

Ahh, the elusive second person.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I used to tell my high school creative writing students that second-person is the hardest POV to do well, <\/span>but <\/span><\/i>when it is done well, it\u2019s incredibly effective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Most authors don\u2019t use second person<\/strong>, unless they\u2019re writing a choose-your-own-adventure story. But I love second-person, at least for short pieces.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think I\u2019d want to read an entire novel where \u201cyou\u201d are the protagonist, but one of my favorite short stories, <\/span>You Could Be Anyone<\/span><\/i>, from Melissa Bank\u2019s <\/span>Girls Guide to Hunting and Fishing, <\/span><\/i>uses second-person in a mind blowing way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the end,<\/strong> \u201cyou\u201d realize that the story could not have been told from any other perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n

First Person Plural<\/h2>\n

In first-person-plural, no single narrator is identified. Instead, the narrator is a group that speaks as a unit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I put this one at the bottom of the list<\/strong>, because it is so rarely used. But Faulkner\u2019s short story, <\/span>A Rose For Emily<\/span><\/i>, where the townspeople collectively reflect on an old woman\u2019s death, is one example.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve seen mentions online of 4th person and even 5th person POV.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To me, 4th person seems very similar to first person plural<\/strong>, and 5th person sounds like it\u2019s just writing consistently in the passive voice and\/or using a lot of personification.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus, I won\u2019t go into detail about either of those.<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, I will tell you again what I firmly believe\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Before writing any piece of fiction, your most important decision is about point of view.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Do you need an unreliable narrator, or are you writing a tale of self-discovery? Perhaps first person is best.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Are you writing a mystery<\/strong>, where you must cast doubt on multiple characters, and you can\u2019t get too close to any of them? Consider third-person-omniscient.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you need flexibility with your story-telling, yet you want the reader to feel close to the protagonist? Go for third-person limited.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Are you going for a super-intimate experience<\/strong>, where the reader \u201cbecomes\u201d the protagonist? Take a chance, and use second-person.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Or perhaps you want to rotate perspectives between chapters, or even between paragraphs, and you\u2019ll use a combination of POVs. That method is becoming more and more standard.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the Thing\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Whatever POV(s) you use, you should use with purpose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By the end,<\/strong> you should feel that the story could not be told successfully any other way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What if you don\u2019t?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I suggest revising the piece by writing it from a different point of view, just to see what discoveries you make.<\/span> I\u2019m in the process of doing that right now for my latest WIP.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

There Is No \u201cBest\u201d POV<\/h2>\n

But there will always be \u201cthe best\u201d POV for your story or novel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a writer, it\u2019s your job to figure out what that POV is.<\/strong><\/p>\n
