Anne Lamott wrote in her spectacular treatise<\/strong>, <\/span>Bird by Bird<\/span><\/i><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0that we all must start with a shitty first draft.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And that’s true.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A really bad first draft precedes every great book.<\/span><\/p>\n

I call my first drafts \u201cpiles of words.\u201d<\/strong> These piles get shifted and formed like a sandcastle being built at the beach– sand shifting and tides changing as I nudge this little part closer to the other or destroy a turret in order to build a better foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n

And you know what?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Writing those crappy first drafts is hard. It’s harder than almost anything.<\/span><\/p>\n

Crappy First Draft\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Writing these horrible, awful, no good first drafts perks up your inner perfectionist to tell you that you need to go back and edit that right away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Drag Judgmental Judy along to tell you that all of the words are awful and you might as well just quit writing altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sound familiar?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yep, you’re not the only one who feels this way. Come over and join us at our table. Today we’re eating ice cream!<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlatching the talons of that inner perfectionist and judge is hard.<\/strong> And even when you’ve done it once, you’ll find that the effort must be repeated.<\/span><\/p>\n

Darn it!<\/span><\/p>\n

But editing is easier with all those words waiting and ready to spark your inspiration<\/strong>. As a wise person once said, \u201cYou can’t edit an empty page.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The crappy first draft can’t be avoided.<\/span><\/p>\n

Practice Writing a First Draft<\/h2>\n

Who needs practice to write a first draft?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They’re awful!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why would we practice?<\/strong><\/p>\n

And that’s just the thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because they are awful.<\/strong> Because we’re ashamed of the horrible wording and inelegant connections and reprehensible metaphors that bubbled up onto the page, we don’t want to write them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Who would? Bleargh!<\/span><\/p>\n

And thus, writing them is difficult.<\/strong> What could be an all-out gonzo playtime is changed into a morass of self-doubt and horror.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s make a change. Let’s start practicing our rough drafting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now’s a great time!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

We’ve got NaNoWriMo, the biggest playground of rough drafting, coming up in November. Time to practice!<\/span><\/p>\n

Here’s The Exercise\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Write the crappiest draft you can for five minutes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Seriously. Make it horrible.<\/strong> Use clich\u00e9s. Stuff metaphors in by the dozen. Is that an adverb? Why use one when you could seriously, hopefully, arguably use three? Start multiple sentences with the same word.<\/span><\/p>\n

Write quickly. Write crappy. Write short.<\/span><\/p>\n

Want a prompt?<\/strong> Here you go: It was a dark and stormy night….<\/span><\/p>\n

What? You expected something good? No way!<\/span><\/p>\n

Give it a try.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Write the crappiest words you can for five minutes.<\/strong> Really try to make them bad. Work your hardest to write the worst thing imaginable.<\/span><\/p>\n

When You’re Done, Rejoice!\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

You did it! Woohoo!<\/span><\/p>\n

How did it feel to just let loose and write whatever came into your mind?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To know that when Judgmental Judy told you your writing was horrible<\/strong>, you could just say \u201cWell spotted, Jude! That’s what I was going for!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

By rejoicing at the end of each crappy rough draft, you reinforce the pleasant aspects of this part of the process. And each time you do that, you teach yourself that writing that rough draft can be fun.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By training your brain that rough drafting is more play than work<\/strong>, you reduce your resistance to starting and undermine any tendency toward procrastination.<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember, this is a practice, not a magical spell that eliminates your inner perfectionist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s normal to find Judy yammering on about word choice.<\/strong> This practice helps you to push her to the back of your brain and keep writing.<\/span><\/p>\n

And that’s the point.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Rough drafting is an unavoidable part of our passion, and the only one where we can allow ourselves the unvarnished, unvanquished ridiculousness of our minds. Why not have some fun with it?<\/span><\/p>\n

Write it crappy now,<\/strong> so you can return to edit and make it beautiful.<\/span><\/p>\n
