I ripped off Agatha Christie.<\/strong><\/p>\n

To be fair, her novel, <\/span>The Mysterious Event at Styles, <\/span><\/i>is in the public domain, which means it\u2019s okay to do whatever with it. It\u2019s like finding a couch in the alley with a \u201cfree\u201d sign. If you take the couch, is that considered stealing? Of course not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, I\u2019m not equating Agatha Christie\u2019s work to an abandoned alley couch.<\/strong> I believe Christie\u2019s genius is underappreciated when it comes to literary merit. That said, I learned a few things when I adapted her novel into something that I could call my own– sort of.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Mysteries, Details Matter. A Lot.\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Originally, I thought I could go into Christie\u2019s novel, do some gender reversals, change the setting to northern Minnesota, make the characters talk like Midwesterners from 2022, and switch out the handwritten notes and briefcases full of top secret files for cell phones and laptops.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Turns out that Agatha Christie is very<\/i> detail oriented.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I had to come to terms with her attention to detail and how she masterfully manipulated that into her plot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This was a challenge for sure, but once I figured it all out, I felt like I\u2019d completed a vigorous workout.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Trust that Your Readers are Intelligent\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Christie wrote <\/span>The Mysterious Event at Styles <\/span><\/i>on a dare, and she bet her sister that she wouldn\u2019t be able to guess who the killer was.<\/span><\/p>\n

I believe Christie won the bet.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thus, red herrings abound in her novel, and as I worked on my version, I kept asking myself if I should be more obvious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the end,<\/strong> I trusted Christie\u2019s judgment. I figured if she could let her readers draw their own conclusions, then so could I.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let Your Characters Make Terrible Mistakes\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

In my version of the novel, the narrator is Helen (aka Hastings), a traumatized security guard who is helping Perle (aka Poirot) find the murderer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s a scene in the original where Poirot says some very hurtful things to Hastings<\/strong>, and then he makes a mess of the investigation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I <\/span>wanted<\/span><\/i>\u00a0to skip all of that, but I let Helen have her low point, so then she could rebound. That\u2019s essential in any good plot, but I still found it so hard to do.<\/span><\/p>\n

Transitions Don\u2019t Have to be Messy\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I sometimes have a hard time getting my characters to move from the living room to the dining room without excess description, or curtailing their conversations so that they don\u2019t ramble.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I have no idea how many revisions Christie made of <\/strong>The Mysterious Event at Styles<\/strong>, <\/span><\/i>but she does a great job of keeping up the pace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Except for Poirot\u2019s theories and explanations. Then it got long-winded, and I believe modern readers would find some of it tedious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, I trimmed her original 50,000 words down to 36,000<\/strong>, and that doesn\u2019t include the original passages I put in. It wasn\u2019t always easy to know what I could get rid of (see #1: Details Matter).<\/span><\/p>\n

You Can Always Make the Story Your Own<\/span><\/h2>\n

I write character-based novels, where I emphasize relationships, self-discovery and redemption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That wasn\u2019t really Agatha Christie’s style.<\/strong> And yet, the potential for all that was there, on every page.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All I had to do was relax, find my openings, and have fun.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the end, <\/span>Murder at Styles Resort <\/span><\/i>differs from anything else I\u2019ve written. Actually, I\u2019m saying that I <\/span>adapted<\/span><\/i>\u00a0it, as opposed to <\/span>writing<\/span><\/i>\u00a0it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I feel like I found a great exercise to grow as a writer<\/strong>, and now I look forward to writing my own mystery from scratch. Also, now I have my \u201creader magnet\u201d, which means I\u2019m offering <\/span>Murder at Styles Resort <\/span><\/i>as a free download in exchange for signing up for my mailing list.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
