think bible stories or Koran stories.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Since the invention of writing<\/strong>, our stories have become longer and more detailed, a direct result of emerging\u00a0 technologies of the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A feature of a short story or flash fiction &#8212; an even shorter story &#8212; is the author\u2019s ability to hint at a larger story or idea, leaving the reader to think or consider what else could have happened or even why the ended finished as it did.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A good example of flash fiction are our own urban myths.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>We quickly establish credibility<\/strong>, the cousin of my aunt told me &#8212; , deliver the terrible idea &#8212; a woman decided to dry off her poodle in the microwave &#8212;\u00a0 and imply the moral of the story &#8212; don\u2019t be an idiot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to write one?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small fish, big hook\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Flash fic readers have busy lives and short attention spans<\/strong>, so your first task is to convince them your story is worth their time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the hook? <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can you draw in your reader with the first sentence?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quick character conflict<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The situation needs to be bad, fast. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With less than 1,000 words, descriptions, inner life, motivation all needs to be expressed concisely and with determination.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Wreck your characters<\/strong>, toss them up onto a dangerous beach, and either save them or leave them to rot in each other\u2019s bad company all in a very few sentences.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, don\u2019t waste your space on words like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deliver satisfaction\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if the plot does not result in a happy ending, do resolve the conflict within the story\u2019s confines.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Wrap it up.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conclusions are the heart of flash fiction &#8212; which is why we remember parables and Aesop\u2019s fables so well.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main elements of Flash Fiction<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use strong imagery\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make every single word count. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basement apartment coupled with moldy shower curtain, shag-rug splendor<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweet smell of decomposing garbage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weak imagery &#8212; color<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strong imagery &#8212; burnt red, pumpkin orange, pale gold<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weak imagery &#8212; small<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strong imagery &#8212; tiny, minuscule, miniature<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stick to one moment\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focus on one particular moment in time.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin \u2013 A woman hears that her husband is dead. And envisions freedom from her marriage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce \u2013 a hanging. A\u00a0man\u2019s adventure to freedom minutes before his death.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, a ticket is pulled. A calm acceptance of the bizarre.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Last Leaf by O. Henry \u2013 an illness is established. The power of image and persuasion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant \u2013\u00a0 A loaned necklace misplaced. Laboring for years for something that is not real.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work with just one or two characters\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Don&#8217;t spread your story too thin.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s amazing how much you can learn about absolute strangers if you just stop to think about the kind of an animal they\u2019ll put in a test rocket\u2026 &#8211; Test Rocket\u00a0 &#8211; Jack Douglas<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kate Chopin \u2013 the Story of an Hour \u2013 One woman and the man who brings her the \u201cnews\u201d of her husband\u2019s death.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ambrose Bierce &#8211;\u00a0 An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge \u2013 a single perspective, one POV.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surprise your reader\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not a trick but rather delivering an ending that is surprising.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>A good twist begins with the end in mind.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of a beginning and an ending that would be surprising.\u00a0 Not like Reader, I married him.\u00a0 But more like the laughing policeman.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The girl who thought a man was staring at her, but in the end, discovers he is blind.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The friendly man who feeds a starving guard dog \u2013 and moves on to rob the house.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our wife is not a widow &#8212; Kate Chopin, The Story of an Hour.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our escaped convict did not escape&#8211; Ambrose Bierce, An Occurrence of an Hour.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make good use of your title<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kate Chopin \u2013 The Story of An Hour, what could possibly happen in an hour?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ambrose Bierce &#8211;\u00a0 An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge \u2013 the passive nature of this title belies the subject of death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Title ideas:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heads Rolled<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t Look into the Laser with Remaining Eye<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take offs on popular titles or songs that evoke an image or a whole story<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No Vacancy at Hotel California\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baby, Not One more Time<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smells Like Teen Spirit<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes it takes more time to craft a short story than to ramble on in a longer novella or novel.\u00a0 But worth the time and effort as you create a piece you\u2019ll be proud of and your readers will remember.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Want to read more articles like this one Writer\u2019s Fun Zone?
