The part where you get motion sickness, where you get the middle seat in the row, where you get hungry and trapped in airports and hotels and the cheapest thing on the menu is an $18 hamburger.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bleah! Is there anything worse?!\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But at least as writers, we can transform these icky situations into wonderful opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>After all, as Philip Roth said<\/strong>, \u201cNothing bad can happen to a writer. Everything is material.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There, in the airport, the hotel bar, the beach or park or supermarket, wherever your current nightmare exists, the easiest way to distract yourself and practice your writing skills is to create character studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you do that?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While in a busy environment, say the gate at the airport or a crowded beach, select a person and watch them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get curious <\/span><b>but don\u2019t stalk them<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe stalk them just a teeny tiny bit.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask questions as you observe\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why are they lingering on that particular park bench?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who are they rushing toward as they zip through the terminal?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What prompted her to wear a thong bikini with a sparkly gold net cover-up to Trader Joe&#8217;s?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let their look, their actions, their belongings build a persona in your head\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are they wearing well-made, sturdy clothing or cheap polyester?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do they move with confidence or skitter around?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are they hauling a monster-sized purse or getting by with what&#8217;s in their pockets?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select an origin and a destination for their trip\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe they&#8217;re visiting family after being gone for a decade.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps their bank account finally hit the mark and they&#8217;re going on their dream vacation to Bora-Bora.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has the boss demanded they travel to Reno for an in-person meeting with a difficult client.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine their home\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do they live in an apartment?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A mcmansion?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A witchy cottage on the Georgia coast?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What&#8217;s their job?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do they push paper at a desk?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plumber?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cook?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Influencer?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Build a full life for them.
